I'm considering a train table for ds who will be three this Fall. Like most boys his age, he loves trains, but he is handicapped (parapelegic) so he really destroys set up track when he's crawling around on the floor with it. He also has some therapeutic standing equipment that I think would be great at the height of a train table.
But this thing would be a major space hog in the bedroom--taking up about 25% of the total space in the room. We have a very tiny apartment--so it can't go anywhere else. If kids really love these and play with them all the time, that might be okay. But if they are novel for a few weeks and then sit, unused, we'll definitely skip it.
Any thoughts?

The table can also be used for other things - like GREAT duplo creations!
You might also like the solution (if it's sturdy enough) that some friends of mine used. They kept their train stuff in 2 big (tall) storage bins, then kept a piece of plywood (or some wood) under the couch. When they took the train set out, they placed the wood across the 2 bins to make a temporary table.

When our train mania was at its mayhem, I covered a piece of plywood with green felt and cut out little light green bushes and flower beds, blue ponds, ducks, etc...the kids built the board as they put the track together. We stored the tain set in a large rubbermaid box and put the plywood out on the coffee table to play and behind the sofa for storage. It worked great.

My children rarely play with trains these days, but they always play with the train table. Frequently, they have very elaborate Playmobil or Lego's set ups. They practically fight over who gets to set up on the table and they are 12, 9 and 7  . The table is now at a hieght that they can sit on the floor at play at the table. I have to say our table is played with more than the trains ever were.
My dh built our train table, if your dh is handy I am sure they are plenty of free plans on the web.

I'm afraid that the train table at our house doesn't get as much play as the one at Barnes and Noble.  I don't know why...maybe it's the crowd of kids all playing together that makes it so interesting.
I say go for it, especially if it will work in conjunction with his therapeutic equipment. You could always leave it out for awhile, then put it in storage, and later bring it out again. That might keep the interest level up and make it an enjoyable thing for a longer time.

Waldorf play suggests you have some sort of "stage" for the kids to set up little toys on, be it trains, blocks, little scenes, dolls, etc...so I was thinking the more bare bones you go on this, the better value. What is a train table one day could be a city of blocks the next and a restaurant table the next, etc...hmmmm, might have to find one for us now....
