Hi Ladies,
My daughters and I are going to have to cover ourselves up for my next short term assignment in a certain country. Has anyone had any experience of this? How did your dds respond? Any tips? I am afraid it would slip off the girls heads or an ankle would be shown - so bulky socks are in. I am tempted to sew them up so nothing can slip off. Maybe take an electric fan to keep cool on the inside of the layers.

Hi Mama Moon,
I'm sorry but I don't have any experience on this one. No one else seems to either.
I hope you don't have to resort to this ebay purchase
It has certainly made me stop and think today.

There are two piece head coverings that have a headband like piece that covers the front of the head/forehead and then sort of works to hold on the second piece that is sort of like a tube of material.
If you do a Google search on "two piece hijab" you'll come up with several examples. Here is one example on ebay:
Click Here for the ebay link
These stay on quite well and aren't subject to slipping.
Does the country you are going to require the hijab (headcovering) only? Or does it also require the niqab (face covering) as well?

Thanks Mari and thanks Carole for the info
I will not need the niqab - just headcovering and manteau/coat down to thighs or longer in some cases. I have actually found a good place to get recent info - from the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum. It really is preoccupying me more and more. I think it is because of what is stands for rather than the act of wearing that is on my mind.

I lived for a while in a middle east country. I had to wear the abaya when out - it didn't really add that much to how hot you were. If it was hot, it was hot! We only had to wear the headcovering if we were told which thankfully for me was only once because I could not keep it on my head - it always slipped. Practice before you go.
If you get one with a headband - make sure it covers your neck properly.
I didn't have kids at the time so I can't help you there except to say - what a great experience for them.

I have no advice, but along these lines, have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? Talk about thought-provoking (and depressing!)

There is a website called "hijab girl". I don't remember the specific link exactly but tht is the name of it. She has a lot of coverings etc. and explains how to to use them.

Hi Ladies
I think I'll have to read A Thousand Splendid Suns after the trip! I mustn't get depressed even before starting out. Maybe I might come across someone with a copy some time out here.
I checked up the hijab girl site. I shall definitely make some of those underscarves out of old T shirts for us. I was thinking along the lines of a head band before but I think these longer ones are a better idea. That will make me feel a whole lot more confident about the scarves not slipping off and if they do slip your whole head/hair is still covered. You can just pin them to the scarf. And those sleeve bits look a good idea but it must feel strange to wear them - so used to uncovering the ends of my arms in summer rather than the other way round.
I have remarked that you get a great choice of colours in the countries where it is not obligatory.
So thank you for all your help. It is all piecing together now.
In gratitude

For what it's worth, I was just reading about the British women's polo team that played in Tehran fairly recently---they had to wear a polo hijab for the tournament. Surprisingly, they said the hijabs really weren't an impediment at all. Sooooo, if you can play polo in a hijab without problem, I imagine head and ankle coverings for regular daily activities shouldn't be too bad, either Your posting sounds like an adventure to me!

Hope you can send us sound bytes from your posting-I'd love to hear how it goes!
There's an enjoyable book called "A Street in Marrekech", written by a mother of three who spent two years in Morocco (and had to wear head coverings for outdoor forays). It is a very good read, and not depressing at all-they loved their stay. Highly recommended.
Enjoy those camels and remember Auntie Mame's motto: Life's a banquet, and most poor suckers are out there starving to death!
