Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those of you that do volunteer work, would you happen to have some suggestions for family volunteering opportunities?

We've done a stint in PA where we were handing out food to homeless people.

Here last year we were able to serve at the soup kitchen and bring Christmas goodies to a family in need. The group we are in that does this only organizes these things a couple of times a year, perhaps because of their own individual schedules.

But year-round we are having a hard time finding things we can do TOGETHER as a family. I check at volunteer match, etc. but usually find volunteer opportunities that are meant for teens, or for men, but hardly anything that calls for whole families.

Any suggestions?

I heard recently that you can bring your kids along when volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Not sure but maybe you could check into it?? I'm looking forward to seeing other suggestions.

We lead a rosary at the nearby retirement home on Sunday evenings and go once a month to the assisted living center to sing songs and do a craft. Because cooking at the soup kitchen is impossible with everyone, we sometimes volunteer to go organize pantry or prepare something at home and drop it off...opening all the cans of green beans, seasoning them in the pot and dropping it off so all they have to do is put it on the stove. Sometimes when there's not something specific we can do in a week, we make a spiritual bouquet for a parish or retired priest or go pick up trash and weed the gardens around church or in the park. Sometimes I take the older kids to adoration and let them color Catholic color sheets while we pray. When we leave, we drop them off at the hospital to be handed out to patients.

I did Meals on Wheels in VA Beach for 3 years and brought all six of my little ones (then!). The elderly loved it and my kids learned so much. It was a lot of work, but only once a month.

A nursing home is a great place where your entire family could go. Many of those people have family that don't visit them very often. Perhaps you could bake special treats and take them to the nursing home every two weeks or month. Seeing young children often makes these people happy, and your older ones could do things like read to some patients or just engage them in conversations about their life experiences.

And there may be some charities that need help sorting the large quantities of donations they receive (St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, Disable Veterans). This could be a family affair.

I think its great that you want to do this. I hope to be able to do something similar when my children get older.
