Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone heard of this Clearplay DVD filter & player?

It sounds nice...but I would be worried about the quality? What do you guys think?

Part of me thinks if something needs to be censored that much, why watch in the first place? I don't know...

Something to think about though...

Looks cool. My dh and ds love any and all superhero movies. They are usually fine, except for the "one" scene. In fact, they went to see Transformers earlier this summer. Dh was furious because the movie was fantastic, fun, and well done but for one scene that wasn't even pertinent to the plot. He lamented that we couldn't really have it on DVD in the house because of those few minutes.

Kacky,

Embarrassingly enough, we bought Clear Play since we needed a new DVD player. I saw it at Target; the concept looked neat; it wasn't that much more expensive...

I bought it months ago... but we haven't set it up yet. Summer has just been too busy!

I haven't heard any feedback either -- so I'd be interested in hearing some!

ETA: And I agree -- if it needs to be filtered, I don't want it in my house. But I thought it would be better to have it than not to have it for so little cost -- if that makes sense??? And to test it -- I bought Miss Potter!! Which equally makes no sense -- WHAT would they filter! I felt silly trying to explain it all to Dan why I bought Miss Potter to test it out.

Okay Maryan you need to be the guinea pig here...and don't go for Mrs. Potter. What would be good...hmmm...?

Actually first how does it work? Do you buy special dvds or does the thing come programmed with some filters already? Is that what the subscription service is?

Try a PG movie that maybe shouldn't have been...you know those kind. Or here's one...Raiders of the Lost Ark...that movie was the first movie (I believe) to get the PG-13 rating...it started it all. I know it has language...but I'd be interested about what was considered too violent.

Back to the PG movies...you know ET has language, Garfield too. I wonder if it does the word stupid or just curse words. I'm betting just curse. Actually you know what movie we turned off immediately, like within 30 seconds because we had forgotten the very first line of the movie (one long string of curses) was The Right Stuff. Oh and also Bad News Bears, the old one with Walter Matthau (sp?). Had some racial slurs too...again right at the beginning and the kids were saying them! UGH! That was turned off too!

Okay...I'm rambling with movies (do I watch too many)? But I see how for those sorts it could be good...especially when it is the unnecessary exclamation here and there. We tend to cringe and pray they weren't listening very well.

I just can't imagine the filter can cut a big scene out...gotta be weird. Here's one Maryan...do you have the LOTR movies???? I wonder what it would censort there? If anything? A lot of it could be deemed too violent by some.

Okay...I'll stop!!!!

The secret reason is that you need some female movies once in a while!

to both KackyK and JennGM, you're both making me laugh.

I have LOTR definitely -- good idea! But I'm the ultimate procrastinator!! Maybe this will be the week!!

From what I understand, it works by a flash drive that you stick into your computer for updates that you then put into the DVD player (or something like that)... but how it actually does the editing...??????

So stay tuned... for a while... hopefully somebody else has it!!

Okay...so we are relying on Maryan it seems to be the one to forge ahead...

Here's inspiration Maryan...thinking of your John Paul's love/curiosity of GWashington (it was him right?)...if the good general had thought...hmmm...should I cross this river, how will I do it...maybe I should wait and blog about it and someone else will have a great idea for me! But thankfully, there were no blogs and he forged (is that a pun??) forth.

Sister...you are our George Washington! See those of us without...like me, waiting to possibly make a purchase...are not the forgers (we have no rivers...you have the river!!!)

I love to give you a hard time!!!!

Thanks Maryan!!!!

I have no experience with it, but a college-aged friend with younger siblings was tellnig me about it. They have it because of the wide age range of kids and movies like LOTR. She said it is really great, doesn't effec the quality of the movie and makes it possible for the younger siblings to watch some of the PG-13 movies with the older ones. That's all I know. Perhaps if she comes over soon, I'll ask her more.

Thanks Colleen for the reference! I don't think the dvd players are really all that expensive either...so sounds like something to try. Hmmm...or maybe I'll leave it for a Christmas/Birthday wish list item (those 2 days are 4 days apart for me )

And woohoo Maryan is off the hook!

Maryan,
As a mom of five boys, I'll do anything I can to rescue from the chaos of trying to assemble something new in a house full of little men---the advice, the styrofoam ripping, the box throwing....oops, having a bad daydream . Happy I could set you free!

Colleen --

Those have been all my reasons!!!

Now shockingly enough - I went to bed early last night... and my non-techno dh hooked up the Clear Play (without me even mentioning this thread -- perhaps the box sitting next to the TV for months was the incentive!!)... and the real impetus was... because he wanted to watch an educational DVD on basketball drills since I went to bed early.

And that's when he discovered the fine print that I missed... you have to be a member of ClearPlay to get the USB drive thingy and the downloads... The first year is $5 per month = $60/yr. and they say that is 40% off.

We just don't watch movies enough to justify the expense! So, Colleen, now I'm really glad you came to the rescue!!

Ah ha...the fine print. Stinks that's always there. A friend of mine said that she thought it was $7.95 per month. So yeah...you'd have to watch A LOT of movies to make that worth it! And since we watch basically the same movies over and over (think Star Wars, National Treasure, John Wayne stuff & olders only POTC and me & dh only LOTR) I won't worry about it.

Boy we've come full circle I guess!!!
