Does anyone sell things on Amazon? I am thinking about doing it but it looks complicated and they want info such as my checking account number (which they said they can't get rid of from their files once I am done selling). Is it easier than it looks? Or are there better options?

They want your checking account number because that's how they'll pay you. They direct deposit into your account. Once you're set up, it's really simple, even more simple than paypal.

Elizabeth,
I did understand that is how they pay you but,I don't like the fact that they will always have your account information on file and can't get rid of it when you are done selling. It doesn't seem safe to me for them to have that info in their system when I am no longer selling.

Another way to do it is have them credit you a gift certificate for sales -- I don't make that much so it's nice to get a free book or two each month ....
You could also look into an independent book seller near you who might like you to be an "online salesman" for them thru your blog or something.

I've just put a few books on Amazon after a recent decluttering exercise. The first one has just sold  , and for much more than I would have got on ebay. Trouble is, you need to keep an eye on it because obviously you need to dispatch books quickly if they sell -- something to bear in mind if you're likely to be away from the computer for a few days.

You could open a special checking account just for your Amazon sales, especially if you have a credit union and they don't charge a bundle for a new account. Then, if you stop selling, you can just close that account...all will be well.

Why do you think you got more on amazon than on ebay? I have a bunch of books I need to clear out of here. Just considering the best way to do it...

On Amazon you sell books for a fixed price -- which can be reasonably high as long as it's cheaper than the next cheapest offer. Still a lot cheaper than buying the book new. Eg I sold a history text book for £5.99 plus £2.75 postage (the latter fixed by Amazon, more than it actually costs). The book new would have been £20.99. After paying Amazon's cut, I made £6.35. Not bad!
With ebay, it obviously pays to have a low starting bid to attract buyers. I usually start books at 99p. It also means that you might make just that pittance, if there's not much interest. I made sure to check completed items first to see which were likely to sell, and which not. Some popular paperback fiction just doesn't sell in either forum so I decided just to give it to a charity shop. The other thing is that on ebay, you pay a small amount whether it sells or not. There's no listing fee on Amazon.
The advantage of ebay is that you know within a week (or however long you list it for) whether or not it's going to sell, rather than having it hanging around for ages in the hopes that it will sell on Amazon. (I think the listing stays open for 6 months if you don't cancel it.) But you make less on ebay. Also, listing on ebay takes longer. It's very quick on Amazon.
I would just decide based on the type of book. I've put textbooks in good condition on Amazon, more 'general interest' titles on ebay.
