My dd has her first loose tooth and I'm trying to decide what to do about the tooth fairy. I'm not particularly attracted to the idea...din't grow up with it and so forth. We don't do Santa or the Easter Bunny either. DD however has ofcourse heard of it from tv shows and so forth. So...anyone here who does not do the tooth fairy, how do you deal with the whole thing?
If you think that the tooth fairy is just wonderful and see no problems at all with it, I respect your opinion and there are plenty of people to support your opinion...however I'd like to hear specifically from those that have struggled with this as I currently am.
Thanks in advance.

We "do" the tooth fairy, as a myth/story, just like we do Santa. The girls know it's me ...I hand write a funny letter or use a funky font on the computer. They get a little money (or a small gift for a first tooth) - more for extractions, lol. But this way I feel they get to enjoy the fun of the tooth fairy without giving in to the whole shebang.

We don't. My girls get too much fun out of showing everyone their teeth for me to do it. LOL. Plus they don't really get all whoop-de-doo about money...

That's interesting, Amy. How did you introduce it? How do they know it is you...did you come out and tell them that this is what you were going to do?

Honestly, I don't remember! But with two of them losing teeth now, it is easy for me to talk about one of them helping me be the tooth fairy for her sister. I wish I could remember how it all started though.

We do not do Santa, Easter Bunny either--and no tooth fairy. Of course, you want to be consistent!
We just say "put your tooth under your pillow and see what happens."
With our older one (7) we joke, but he knows its us. And we say "happy tooth day!" (like its a b-day present) when the child gets their quarter next morning! That way, they can infer its from us.

If you are not wanting to throw out the whole idea of having a 'tooth collector' you can always 'Catholicize' it and have St Apollonia (Patroness of Teeth/Dentists) collect the tooth on their behalf, you don't have to keep it 'secret' if you don't want to. Maybe there is another way you can acknowledge the loss of a baby tooth incorporating this saint? Maybe you can print up a lovely picture of St Apollonia from the internet (there are few images out there) and have a little basket near the picture and the tooth could be placed in the basket and a prayer especially made up asking St Appolonia to bless this child with a healthy adult tooth in the place of this baby tooth(I reckon a very wise and practical prayer! and I am sure alot of mums on the board can agree, with so many of us having teeth troubles) and the next morning the tooth is removed (you can let the children know it is you removing it) and there is a coin in it's place.
We have a St Apollonia tradition for the removal of teeth, not quite like that (though it is got me thinking now...that would be nice) but more along the lines of replacing the tooth fairy tradition as it stands. But a modified, 'Catholicized' one where the children still know that the parents are removing the teeth should help with any feelings of discomfort you may have with 'pretending' in the way things are with tooth fairies, Santa, Easter Bunny etc.

I'm glad this thread has got started, I think I will make it the next craft project with the children, to make a permanent craft 'fixture' with an image of St Apollonia, maybe with a little bowl of some sort permananently joined to the image just for the use at these times.
Here's a link to images if anyone is interested.

We tried St. Apollonia too with our oldest. But I think we did it in a way that was still too "Toothfairy-ish." I like your idea Anne a lot!

My son just lost his first tooth and like Amy, we "did" the tooth fairy thing but he knew it was us. He had heard about the tooth fairy from friends, but sounded a little skeptical, which I encouraged, and then my husband just came right out and said it was us. He still stuck his tooth under the pillow and we left a little money, but he was very happy to be able to see his tooth again the next morning.

Whatever she happens to have in her coin purse!
I try to keep some "unusual" coins on hand to make it fun, but that hasn't always been easy to do. Anything like a silver dollar, half dollar, Sacagawea coins, Susan B. Anthony coins. In a pinch, a couple of quarters with a state on the backside. I just found out that they are beginning a Presidential $1 Coin program. That looks promising!
To answer Cay's question... our children usually get about a dollar a tooth (Since we do the change thing it is almost never an exact amount.) We have been known to pay more if the "extraction" was terribly traumatic, ie... swallowing it or a surprise extraction. My oldest girl swallowed one of hers and my youngest girl lost her first tooth after she bit into an apple but she didn't even know it was loose! Very scary for the first time!

The tooth fairy comes here, and leaves $1 per tooth. But the first tooth is $2 and so are extractions.

well, when we first started out losing teeth, dh and I would put a foriegn coin under their pillow. and then we would learn a bit about that place.
but there were so many times that I forgot, that we ended up telling the kids the truth.
it is a big deal still! but more about the new BIG teeth coming in.

Annie, what a perfect idea. Just what I've been looking for.
Cudos, Essy for bringing this topic up!
And Maggie, your saint doll is great inspiration!
