Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I desperately need to get a new vacuum. Desperately

I have had THREE Panasonics in the last 19 yrs.......I have LOVED them.

The first one, well, in my post-partum-ness, uh, well, I ran it over with the car. Backed over it actually.

So, the second one, we used it "to the death".......wore it out. It lasted about 9yrs....loved it!

So, of course, I bought another Panasonic.......did serious research..........and got the LEMON of all vacuum cleaners

I STILL want a Panasonic .......but my husband says NO WAY

So, PLEASE let me know if you have a vacuum YOU LOVVVEEE.

My two criteria: it must not be too heavy to push (too hard on a bad back) and, it must be a minimum of 12 AMPS.

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences...

Not sure the the "ampage" but I have always liked my Kenmore cannisters. I have only had 2-my first was my Mom's for many years before it was passed down to me after I graduated from college-25 years ago!! When number one was no longer working, I shopped. Tried the Oreck-wouldn't fit under the beds--and if I have it out I am doing EVERYTHING!I ended up with another Kenmore and it has been wonderful for the past 8 years. I do have a Bissel upright for just upstairs and it is OK. But the Kenmore works for me best and they seem to be making it like in the "old" days. So unlike the toaster ovens I replace every 2 years--grrrrr!!
I would love to try a Dyson--they sound so cool but it is an upright and I don't think it would fit under my beds.
Oh, and we do have a dog and the Kenmore does great with the hair.
I do remember a thread about vacuums and lot's of people loved their Dysons--but, of course, I have no idea how to find it and get you a link. Sorry.
Hope that helps...
Anne

Here are all the threads where Dysons are mentioned. I don't have time this morning to narrow it any further. Chari, I love my Dyson. Love it.

Ditto. I really love my Dyson. I'm not sure of weight, but I can't handle heavy vacuums, either, and I have no problem. It really makes vacuuming so satisfying.

My sister recently bought one and loves it, also.

I love my Oreck, but the Dyson has the attachments which an Oreck doesn't have. But the Oreck has a bag which I prefer to that cup that you empty out. The Oreck is lightweight, and sorry but I don't know the amps.

dyson all the way. you don't need all the attachments that the animal has, the yellow model is just as good. i used to think that i preferred the bag vacuum but i really love my dyson. i can vacuum under the kids' bed and then dump the cannister into a trash can lid - the kids can pick through and find their legos. i couldn't do that with a bag. my favorite feature of the dyson is that i vacuum hardwood floors and it actually gets up all the dirt.

My Dyson is a cleaning wonder... my only beef with it is that on the thick carpet upstairs, it is really hard for me to push. It's a cardio workout. On the wood floors downstairs and the area rugs, it's fine.

If you know someone with a Dyson, see if you can take it for a test run on carpet to see if it would be OK for your back. Cleaning-wise, though, no vacuum I've ever used can compare.

I vacuumed with my Oreck and then borrowed Mary Chris' Dyson. I saved the many, many canisters of stuff I got up that day in trash bags for my dh to see. He bought a Dyson the next day. It was truly impressive.

Consumer Reports rated the Kenmore Canister the highest.

We have thick shag and I have no problem.

Some people have commented on how I allow free rein with Play-Doh in our family room, which is carpeted. They all complain about the bits and pieces getting stuck to the carpet. So far I've had no problems. The dried stuff just comes up with no problems with my Dyson.

We're still saving up for our good one -- after having lost 3 vacuums in the last 4 years... my choices are Miele and Dyson, but Kenmore (Rachel's suggestion) is now on my list too. I don't have a lot of trust in Consumer Reports, except for their vacuum reviews, because they really test them extensively; the Kenmore has compared favorably with the way-more-expensive Miele, not just at CR but at other sites too.

Two places that offer comprehensive vacuum reviews:

Consumer Search -- they compile reviews from different sources, including Amazon and Epinions, and

Allergy Buyers Club

Trust me too on the Dyson -- we've been doing a slight renovation (more on THIS later! ) and our Dyson sucked up ALL the dust from drywall and didn't even "blink" ... and we use it for bare floors as well as carpeted, getting dust off the floor moulding and just all round general cleanup.

The Dyson has also proven indestructible in this house (which is saying alot as when the kids have to clean, they're not always happy about it and tend to bang around ALOT!)

Well, just to mix it up a bit I have a Sebo.

It's German made, and no belts!

I love my Oreck. Very light. I don't like bagless.

I have my second Kenmore canister. The first one lasted for 12 years. It's the 12-amp, HEPA filter model. I'm very happy with it!
