Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering what age you let your children watch LOTR. I am watching it for the first time (prescreening for my 10 yr old dd) and I can't decide. I haven't watched all of it, just the first half. I have read the books out loud and she has read them all herself too, but I'm not sure if the movie is too scary for her or not. How did you decide when to let your kids watch it?

Sorry, mom... you know your kidlet best. No one can tell you if a child will freak out or not. You know, the first part of the first movie isn't scary... watch that together. In the daytime. Once you get to the mines of Moria, see if the child is still OK with the peril and tension. Go from there.

We found our 10 year old could watch it during the day, but it was too scary close to bedtime.

Peace,
Macmom

Yeah, and my 5 3/4 boy is sleeping quite soundly at the moment after a viewing of The Return of the King tonight

I NEVER would have let my older children watch it when they were younger.... NO WAY

.....but this little guy has five older siblings..........and knows when to turn his head during what part of the movie.....

macmom is right.........go with your gut, after a bit of prayer. I think her advice is good, about seeing how Moria goes.

Jess
It really is an indivdual thing, Macmom is right.

Our rule was that they had to read the book prior to watching the movie. Ds was busting himself to do so, and he did by the time he was 10. However he is our oldest boy and older for his years in some ways. I was not a happy mum though and drove him and his oldest sister, 12 at her first viewing, insane with questions at the scary parts. "are you all right, is this too scary?" I was gasping and hiding (aren't the riders totally freaky?)They were not impressed with me

Our next ds is 10 now and is reading his way through the book but as he has been reading for six months and is only on chapter 4 I'm not too worried. He is the child whom I don't want to watch too soon as he is more easily prone to nightmares. He has nightmares after Star Wars and is forbidden to watch that anymore.

So it really depends on your dd's nature. Chari is right though, are oldest are much older than our youngest are when they get the privelges. My older dc are not impressed.

We thought about having our children read it first but found this didn't work with our 2nd child because of a later than average reading age. At 14, he is just now able to start making it through the book. We let him watch at 13. We have an almost 11 year old who we will be letting watch it soon but who isn't ready to read through it on his own. My 2 little girls (8 and 6) won't be ready for several years. They have many fears of creatures. It is an individual thing for each family and each child. My children don't think that's fair but too bad.

Thanks so much. I guess I kind of knew that it depends on my dd, but I just wanted to see kind of an age range. She's my oldest so she's the one I have to test everything on her I only watched half of it last night and I will finish it tonight. You are right about the riders Erin, totally creepy! I'll see how Moria goes. Thanks everyone!
