Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need a good up-to-date resource! Most of the old books I have say that red meat is evil, low-fat margarine is the wonder food, and all the recipes containing eggs use only the white and throw away the "nasty, cholesterol containing yolks"! Boy, things have changed! Having baby #5 at 43 with a husband who is 49 really has me thinking I need to do a better job at taking care of myself and my family. I just don't know where to turn. There is so much information on line, so many resourses, and I don't know where to begin. Any advice? I love on line links as they are free, but a good book would be worth the money!

Well the opposite to the 'red meat is evil, low-fat margarine' is Nourishing Traditions this book has changed our family's life enormously for the better. We recently had Sally Clarkson out here touring in Australia and it was worth listening to her, very inspiring!

Hi Becky - I started the health initiative a few years ago. Here are some of the favorite books on my bookshelf. One word of warning - health books can leave you feeling depressed as it seems like such a big change in lifestyle. We have implemented changes gradually over a few years.

- Nourishing Traditions - Sally Fallon
- The Maker's Diet - Jordan Rubins
- Andrew Weil books - I have Spontaneous Healing and 8 Weeks to Optimum Health
- Superimmunity for Kids - Leo Galland
- Superbaby Food - Ruth Yaron
- You are what you eat - Gillian McKeith
- Prescription for Nutritional Healing - Balch
- The Yeast Connection - William Crook
- Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child

I echo everything said by Marily and Annie!

I would add in prayer to this too. The transition isn't easy and you simply can't do everything. So, you need to ask the Holy Spirit as a guide for a place to start and how do decide what to do and what to not feel guilty about for not doing .

Anne,
Did you have Sally Clarkson and is she doing NT? Or did you have Sally Fallon, the author of NT? If it's the latter, the last time I saw her, she didn't exactly look like the picture of health

I've been doing too much Charlotte Mason reading on the internet of late!

Yes, it was Sally Fallon and I have to say that for a lady her age, she looked REMARKABLY well and wrinkle free!

I think people who promote a healthy lifestyle, should look like proper advocates for it and Sally F is!

Thanks Ladies!
I have a hold on Nourishing Traditions at our Library. I think I'll start there. I also appreciate the advice about taking it slow. I tend to jump into these sorts of things only to burn out. I'm hoping my dh will support me in this, not just because I NEED his support, but because I worry about his health too. He really has some unhealthy eating habits that need to change. He is also in a high-stress job that doesn't allow much time for exercise. Not a good combination. I'm feeling that if I can do a better job with the diet end, that's at least a step in the right direction for all of us.

Can I add another couple of questions regarding the book Nourishing Traditions? I don't have it yet so maybe these will be answered in the book but I am concerned about two things:
Will I gain weight with this? I have 9 lbs to lose from my pregnancy plus about 20 more just to be a healthy weight. I really don't want to start a strict diet that I wont be able to continue. Nourishing Traditions seems more like an entire lifestyle change, which I like, but...I'm worried about actually gaining weight.
My second question is how to get started. Any thoughts on the best place to begin this transition?
Thanks!

Becky - we did a lot of Nourishing Traditions pre-pregnancy - raw milk or full cream organic milk, coconut oil, eggs, beef, butter etc - and nobody put on any weight. I felt better than I had in ages. My kids were never sick. I have to get back to it again once I am organized. I did not have weight to lose - but my view is that you do not put on weight. I think Sally Fallon has also written a book called "Eat Fat, Lose Fat" or something like that.

Re where to start - I only have a couple of minutes - but a suggestions would be:
- start with giving up anything with artificial colors and preservatives
- throw out and avoid anything with hydrogenated oils/trans fats
- avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup
- give up the easy things like unhealthy snacks and junk food
- start with introducing healthy things slowly - eg breakfast first

I recommend a set of cookbooks by Sue Gregg (www.suegregg.com) which helped me a few years ago to learn to cook healthy food so that it tasted good to everyone else.

Hope this helps. (and for the record - I have post partum cravings for every unhealthy sweet thing possible!!! )

Becky, my experience was that I lost weight if I stuck to it correctly and kept away from sugars and refined carbs as suggested - they are such big weight gainers! I think animal fat has been given a bad rap and it is combination of animal fats and sugar/refined carbs that cause havoc. Sugar/refined carbs can do it alone even if you are animal product-free but a good animal fat diet with carbs kept in moderation keeps weight under control(bit like the way the Sardinian's eat and they have high centenarian rates in both men and women.)

When I started out, I made stocks (which become the basis for so many savoury meals) and cut out refined carbs/sugars and put back butter, raw milk, yougurt.   That's how I started and built from there.

Thanks Marilyn and Anne. I discussed this with dh last night. He seemed a little worried. . Anyway, since breakfast has been rather haphazard around here, that is where I'm going to start adjusting things. The change is going to be hardest for my 13 yo ds. He has terrible eating habits which up until now I have allowed. He's pretty stubborn and just wont eat something if he doesn't like it. Because I have worried that he will be hungry, I give in too ofen and give him the food he will eat. But, it occured to me that perhaps going without is better than his standard breakfast of Cinnamon Toast Crunch or american cheese on white bread! He doesn't have a weight problem but if he doesn't change his ways he will eventually, either that or have some sort of heart problem due to high cholesterol. Anyway, didn't mean to rant. Just wanted to say thanks.

Becky - we were prompted to the healthy living thing a few years ago when I was really not well - it was a great incentive. My dh comes from a family which ate very unhealthily - and it has been not been the easiest for him. He was generally great about the changes - though did and still does have to have some "junk". But he is really good now - he jokes and "complains" about it in the office and with friends - but he appreciates all the healthy living. A couple of years ago - he found out he had silent hereditary high blood pressure - and it was a shock to him - as he feels and looks very fit and healthy. But this has made him more health conscious - and he is glad for the changes we have made.

It took a little while for my kids - some of them had severe food allergies - so we had to move towards making and baking all our food and snacks - no bought anything. This helped to get healthier. Now my older 3 are great - they read ingredients, and have healthy tastes.

I used the Super Baby Food plan with my 3 year old - and he has always eaten well and been the healthiest of my kids.

Becky - I have some very easy breakfast ideas that you can prepare the night before or are not time consuming and my kids love them - let me know if you want me to email you - I am generally managing to make them even postpartum when I am very tired. Talking about which - I need to go eat breakfast - after the night nursing I need to

Becky I have been following the Nourishing Traditions diet for 4 years, I had the book and I had medical practioner supporting me in the early stages. This diet supported perfectly my major detoxification of mercury from my body. BUT it wasn't until I heard Sally Fallon speak in person in February that I was struck quite clearly as to why this diet was so important, it became 'crystal clear' I suppose - I am so thankful I went, as she comes to Australia only every 5 years or so.

Becky my recommendation, if you were interested in knowing more about this diet, is to listen to her speak at a conference or better still purchase her 4 CD set of her talks and listen to that. I wish I had bought the CD set selling at the conference at the time, because I could have re-played certain parts of her talk, let my husband listen, lead it to others...I could go on..

I heard about Sue Gregg many yrs ago...and recently bought the baking book with the two step process for grains. I wish my blender was a little bigger as I am having trouble doubling recipes..which has to be done in order to feed everyone.

What is your favorite breakfast recipe?

My older dc remember the good old days when I cooked whole grains from scratch but my middles are protesting while the littlies are eating it up!
