Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We finally discovered that two of our giant trees in the yard are black walnuts! I can already taste black walnut ice cream....

However, we have to hull them first!

Anyone know the best, dh-friendly way to crack these nuts? Or at least remove the hull?

Thanks!

In Iowa, we knew lots of folks who would throw them in the (gravel) driveway and drive over them repeatedly. It saves your hands from the stains, and works well. As for shelling, if you could find an old hand crank sheller, that's the best! Our old trees (9 of them) never had good walnuts, but sure did create havoc for our mower. I used to pay the kids 10 cents a bucket to pick them up.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I agree with Liz, spilling them into a gravel driveway is the best way to remove the green hulls. Don't do it on a paved drive or anywhere you may frequently walk, the stuff stains awfully!

They are incredibly hard to shell, Stef, if you think about it, you just drove over them with a vehicle and the nut is still whole! So a good nutcracker is helpful though we mostly used a hammer, and think about wearing thick rubber gloves if you don't want your hands stained for weeks.
