Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, the long first step in our journey is over! Brian and I will be entering formal discernment in our Diocesan Diaconate program. The application process took six long months. I witheld my excitement at the prospect (very difficult for me!) until we had word that we would be welcomed into the program.

I can't adequately express how elated I am to be preparing for this phase of our lives. I'm excited for myself because I never had the opportunity to attend college. I will be receiving a master's level education, paid for by the diocese. The courses offered sound positively delicious, and I feel that our children have been mightily blessed to be reaping the benefits of our further education in the Faith.

I'm wondering if there are any other wives of deacons (or aspirants, or candidates) on the forums? I'd love to chat with you about it.

Nissa--I am not a deacon's wife myself, but I have two dear friends here whose husbands were just accepted as aspirants as well. Perhaps if you get no reply here they would be up for an e-mail buddy. PM if you're interested.

Congratulations! It really sounds wonderful! My husband and I have discussed it. He would really like to do it but I really can't go along just now. Our daughter is only 8 and if, I beg God to forbid it!, something should happen to me, I would like him to remarry -- or, rather, I would like my daughter to have a mom to get her through what's coming. However, when she's older I would love to do it.

I think you've chosen a wonderful path! Blessings!

Congratulations, Nissa.
And I'd love to hear more about your journey and experience...either here or on your blog. Please post details.

My dh has been interested in the diaconate for a long time but we agreed a long time ago to wait until all the children were grown. (That's just our decision. I think it's a grace and a blessing that you and your dh are going forward with this calling. )

Nissa,
My husband has just gone through the rite of candidacy this past June. If everything goes well, he will be ordained in 2009!

I'm glad to hear of someone else doing this here!

Louise,

Have you attended formation classes with your husband? It seems that some dioceses are not offering that. Our diocese encourages the wives to participate.

When we attended the orientation and the formation classes were described I was so sad - I thought "gee, I wish I could take those classes!". Then Deacon Tony said that wives were not only welcome, but encouraged to attend. And the diocese is trying to have one of the local Catholic colleges issue credits for it.

It's all very exciting. I told Brian I'll have to go out and buy myself a plaid skirt and some Papagallo loafers and a new notebook!

I do attend and I absolutely love it. I have learned so much! It is once a month for a whole weekend.

Oooh! Ours will be two nights a week for 4 years, plus a week each summer.

It seems like the diaconate is growing quite a lot. Louis' godparents will be going through the program with us! That should make it lots of fun.
