Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 12yo got twin block braces today and is horribly upset by them - she was expecting the wire retainer type a couple of her friends have had and has no point of reference for these. She can't speak properly (she was warned about this, but it still came as a shock!) and can't close her mouth so feels embarrassed about her appearance.

Anyone have any experience with twin blocks? Any reassurance I can give her?

Kathryn,

I have worked with twin blocks (I am an orthodontic assistant), and I understand what your DD is going through. It will be an adjustment for the first week, but it is really important that she works WITH the twin blocks and not against them. Practice talking by reading out loud, and being sure that her bite is correctly placed. She will have AMAZING results if she lets it do the work, and it WILL get easier. I promise!

I would say it will take about a week to get used to it, especially if it is used properly. I'm sorry she is having a hard time with the twin blocks.    If she is really upset by them still after a while, I KNOW that there are other options that she can do, if your orthodontist is willing to help you.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can do anything more to help her (and you!) through this.

All three of my sons wore these, and they do take a bit of time to get used to. Reading aloud is a great way to get used to speaking with them, and the results are wonderful(much better than Jasper Jumpers)!!!

Kathryn, I hope things are better today! It does get easier.

I have worked in this field a long time, and my BEST patients were usually the ones who were homeschooled. They were the most compliant, especially with things that had to be "worn" - taken in and out. I always enjoyed talking to them, and they liked hearing that I was homeschooled as well.

I know she will do great!
