There is an article in the Post today written by the author. The piece is in the Outlook section and titled, In Praise of Skinned Knees and Grubby Faces. I tried to link but I think you need to register to read the Post online. My dh enjoyed the article and I think it inspired him a little.

Thanks for the heads up, Mary Chris! I had missed that yesterday. Great article. I bought 4 copies last week to give to all my favorite boys. It's a great book. Several of my siblings got together this weekend and this has been a big topic, about how things have changed so much. Our children our overburded with "things" before they go outside (sunscreen, helmets, water) and there are so many more restrictions due to the nutsos out there. I think I need to read "Last Child in the Woods" now.

I actually bought a copy for my 3 yo, for him to grow into it. His eyes lit up on some of the chapters.
I also gave it to my nephews, ages 11, 8, and almost 5. All 3 are enjoying it at different levels. Perhaps the 7 yo can't read it all alone now, but I think it will inspire him to do so. 
This book reminds me of American Handybook for Boys, which I think we've discussed in another thread. When that book was reissused, I bought both the girls and boys versions and let my younger siblings read them. I'm hazy on the age they first had them, but they are 13 and 15 years younger than me. Anyway, my youngest brother just read that boys book to bits and pieces, for years. It just inspired him and gave him all sorts of ideas. I think Dangerous is something similar...it will satisfy for many years, at different levels.
If you have a Costco the price is only $15, so worth it for a hardcover book with some color pages.

I couldn't read the article, but we are so loving this book in our house right now, even the girls and littles! Nicholas has done so many things out of it with his younger siblings, and his little brothers, who already think he hung the moon, are just in awe of the things he's learned.

I just watched Stephen do a sleight of hand trick for Nicholas. The look on Nicholas' face alone was worth the cost of the book

We have the American Boys Handy Book and I thought many of the projects were really difficult, and some pretty strange. Is this book a little easier to hand to an 11 yr old tomboy and 9 yr old boy and have them find something right away they can do? You know, something other than build a complicated kite, or a gun for that matter!

Various levels...definitely something your sons can do right away, like paper airplanes or water bombs, other projects are more complicated, like making a go cart or tree house. Visit the website for a table of contents. It's not all hands on projects. Codes, invisible ink, dinosaurs,...a variety of info.

My older son (11) is getting quite a kick out of this book. We have the American Boy's Handy Book too.
