New to lapbooking. Concerned I may not be able to afford it. Any free or inexpensive ideas?

Hi Jennifer,
Some of our most fun lapbooks have been made when we were away from out "stuff" or when we had just moved and our things hadn't arrived. We just made Suriname lapbooks using file folders that were being recycled in my husband's office, white paper, a couple of glue sticks and a pack of colored pencils and markers. We cut up free brochures and magazines from the tourist information booth and drew our own rainforest animals (no printer yet).
My biggest expense is usually printer ink, and i'm a laminating junkie when I have my laminator. File folders and paper are pretty cheap. The internet has a lot of links where you can see other people's lapbooks and get some ideas.

Hi Jennifer,
It can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it - but cheap may end up being the most original! A big concern of ours at home is global warming - and we feel that closer to home being in Africa. As Katie did with her move, we use what we have recovered from others in magazines, and old one side used paper, etc. But - I don't even know what a laminator looks like and I can assure you that we are doing just fine without one! And I avoid print outs (don't even have a printer anyway!) The result is that I have two budding artists - I think by not being able to have printouts and pretty pictures they were obliged to develop that side of things themselves. Maybe an extra bonus would be to know as well as being fun and useful, your lapbooks could be eco friendly! So the most expensive things for us are the glue and stock of colour pencils / paints (which could last a long time if your dc don't draw all day like mine!) We have even used an opened up cereal carton/packet for a folder - and stuck blank paper on the design side for the inside of the folder.
Have fun!

I've never bought a pre-made lapbook. We are do-it-yourselfers, too! And I think it is very cheap. The file folders are inexpensive, colored paper is also not so much. Cardstock I try to get on sale, but again, it isn't too bad. In order to conserve paper, we have a basket of scrap paper left from previos projects, and the kids know to look there first before cutting up a new piece.
We do print up stuff from the web a bit, and photocopy, but I like to print in b/w and let the kids color them. More creative, and cheaper ink. Sometimes we do color printing and that is probably our biggest expense. That and gluesticks!
We also have a little cabinet where we keep scraps of ribbon, stickers, yarn pieces, rhinestones, etc that might embellish a book or other project. Real pack-rats, here!
I honestly don't thik of it as expensive at all. More time-consuming than anything.

I have sent the word out to extended family members for their office supply cast offs...we once had an over abundance of index cards and used file folders. We used them in our lapbooks to great success as they are nice and heavy weight-wise and can take the use and reuse.
We also have the copier print out a few shades lighter to save on ink. Many times I just do a lighter copy of clip art in black and white and the kids color it with colored pencils.
If you really want to laminate items, you can use clear contact or clear packing tape!
