Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This blog post of Elizabeth's convinced me to give cloth a go for when Michael comes home. I'm overwhelmed by all the choices/companies out there. With my girls we had a diaper service (thank you, MIL!), so we just used what they supplied (prefolds?) with a cover from Target.

What are your recommendations? What do I need? How many do I need? And do you think they are still economical if I'm only using them for one child? Do they have resale value?

Thanks!
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
I know there was a thread about this just recently, and people had some great ideas. I just had my third baby, but this is my first time using cloth. As you'll see from other threads, what you end up using is largely the result of economics and preference. I think you can save money using cloth, but you can also spend a lot of money, too! There are some really beautiful and cute products out there, but the basics are more economical for me. I use chinese prefold diapers with snappis (for closing the diapers instead of pins), and diaper covers made by "bummis". I've been having a lot of success with these. I have 22 prefolds, and I do wash every 2-3 days. I'm loving it, it feels much more nurturing than using disposables!

I ordered a "getting started" kit from cottonbabies.com, that cost around 30 dollars, to see if I liked it. Then I ordered more when I had a feel for it. I know a lot of people on the other thread said they like "motherease". I haven't tried them yet, but may as the baby grows. I think the best thing to do is buy a couple of different things to see what you like and what works best for you. I have a couple of fitted diapers (the kind that don't need covers) that someone bought me, but they are too expensive for my budget, at about 16-17 dollars a pop. I'm not sure if I'll be lucky enough to have more babies, so I can't really invest that much right now.

good luck, there are a lot of ladies with experience on this board!

My favorite favorite diapers...and I tried a few...
were the fuzzi bunz. They were a bit $$ to start, but they wash beautifully and are definitely worth it IMHO. I get mine from Julie's Stuff (she is a homeschool mom that sometimes posts on this board) I have had mine for 2 years and they are just starting to wear at the elastic because I dry them in the dryer too long all of the time...   I sometimes remember to hang them out and they dry fast because the absorbency is in the liner that you insert in the nifty pocket. (it leaves her skin dryer!) The fuzzi bunz are the ones on Elizabeth's gorgeous clothes line btw

I had to put a disposable diaper on her at one time because the kids were sick and I could not get to wash them quick enough...my dd looked MORTIFIED that I would make her wear such a thing...LOL! Boy, have we come a long way...

I follow the washing suggestions that Julie has on her site. I do see she has some colors on clearance... You could always email her for any questions you have. I drove her crazy with my questions when I first started and she was more than helpful!! LOL can you tell I can't recommend her highly enough? haha!

HTH!

God love you!

number one thing: don't get overwhelmed. Everyone has to find a method that works for them. Plus you may have to change your methods for different children. The most comprehensive site out there is
the diaper pin. You can read product reviews here and company reviews as well. Get washing methods, cost calculators etc.

Everyone also has a favorite provider for their supplies. I like www.heinyking.com because it is one of the only sites out there (and I've searched COUNTLESS) that carries ALL the items I like in one place. Others can testify to their own faves...
