Donna you are too cute......I must recommend however, the A&E version of P and P!   Colin Firth is the "true" Mr Darcy
Actually it is very close to the book, were as, the lastest movie (2005) was a real bummer to me    We like most movies from A&E, they have a Romance collection, that is wonderful!!!

One of my favorite mother/daughter things to do is watch "Pride and Prejudice" together. I love it and could watch it over and over again. All of my girls - ages 20-11 - adore it as well. Once when I had a terrible case of insomnia and panic attacks during my last pregnancy, I put in this DVD and after about an hour, I was relaxed! Enjoy!

(swooning)

That Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth) is 6 hours long. When we were first married my husband and I watched it together. We watched about three hours one night; the next day he came home from work during lunch and said, "What are you waiting for? Hurry, put the movie in!"

My sister just sent me this: http://quizfarm.com/test.php?q_id=202474

I love these types of movies! I'm going to give my $.02 x 6 or so, starting with Jane Austen...

1995 P&P is the definitive "movie" adaptation, but if you can appreciate the 2005 version in its own right, it's a beautiful piece. (I.e., not quite so faithful, even considering things like the necessary compression and cuts for the screen, but still moving and well-done). McFadyen is even from the northern part of England (I think?) like Darcy. That said, I do love a truly proud Darcy, and that IS Colin Firth.

Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson is good, and truer to the spirit of the book, though cuts must always be made. I like to read a book first, usually, so that the actors don't color my reading as much. You can do that with this one, but I don't think it will suffer if you don't.

Emma has two versions made about the same time. In my opinion each has its own strengths. Gwyneth Paltrow-Emma is more comedic and stylized but less fleshed out, maybe a little stilted. Kate Beckinsale-Emma (BBC?) is more realistic, generally closer to the book (I think), less flattering to Emma, more satisfying to purists like me! (Actually, I'm not--see above about P&P. )

Persuasion is my favorite Austen book. Saw the movie first on this one, actually--Ciaran Hinds and Amanta Root. Good cast and editing choices, fine immediacy, one supposedly major historical inaccuracy--a public kiss. Still good.

I'd say avoid Frances O'Connor's Mansfield Park--the main character is unrecognizable from the book, among other things, not least its rating. The book, however, is brilliant.

My all-time favorite is Jane Eyre. (Not Austen, I know, and I'm running out of time for othr non-Austen novels...) I haven't been able to see but one movie version, with Ciaran Hinds also and Samantha Morton--they were both spot on for characters, but much of the book--especially the latter part--was excised. See it w/o the kids first--I'm thinking of one passionate scene in particular, it's been a long time since I've watched it. But it's probably okay.

You may have guessed by now that I could go on and on...

Well... I have to admit that I like them all -- but A&E is my favorite P&P. (LONG!!) There's even a black and white version of it.

Also movies based on Jane Austen books include Emma (with G. Paltrow), Sense and Sensibility (with E. Thompson) and Persuasion with (Amanda Root and Ciara Hinds). ANd I'm sure there are more movies.

Two of her other books (Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park)are on my library list because of the little quiz that Celeste posted!! I can't remember some of the characters.

I wish I could get the links for you Donna Marie -- but I'm pressed for time.

I am embarrassed to say I only read an abridged version of this when I was in high school -- and I've had the unabridged version for 8 years ( -- a gift from our best man, would you believe!?) and still haven't gotten through it -- my dd is 16 now and I meant to read it before she got to this age -- now she's read it before me!    I better get on it. She and AngieMc's dd plan to watch it while she's here.

When asked to name a favorite book (which is not a fair question, IMO), P&P is what I answer. I never tire of it. I had a fabulous English professor (a man, who teaches at UNC Chapel Hill, but who taught for one year at my alma mater because Jesus loves me) who called it one of the greatest. (He also taught a course on the metaphysical poets--Donne, Herbert, et al.--that was just too much fullness to hold on this earth.)

I love A&E's Pride and Prejudice. It's my most favourite movie EVER!!! My dh (almost always) when I'm in a bit of a sad mood will bring it out and put it on. He usually just puts the second disk on and we watch away. He laughs at my giggles and sighs. Never fails to put a smile on my face and joy in my heart.
Pretty silly huh? Just over a movie.
Persuasion is another movie my 18 yo dd bought me for my birthday. I must admit I love that one too.
I bought from amazon a compilation of Jane Austin's books called 8 in 1. If you don't mind reading a book that's just the bare bones ( not to mention small print )it's really quite affordable.
I think I'll get dh to put on Pride and Prejudice tonight.

I can't wait to let my daughter see it. But there a couple of scenes I would skip over for a while yet, she is so innocent.

A friend of mine designed her wedding gown and the bridesmaids after P&P. Even the first hour of dancing was music and dances from that time period. The families and wedding party had learned together. Really beautiful.

Believe it or not, the first version of P&P that I saw was with Laurence Olivier and he will remain MY favorite Mr. Darcy!

Here's a funny story...
Dd and I were sitting at the table with her three brothers who were making a bit of a racket and talking endlessly about baseball. Dd looked at me and in exasperation exclaimed, "That's it! I'm going to marry Mr. Darcy and have 10 girls!" She is WAY P&P .

I wish I could be on the couch with you, Stef, and the girls watching together...

Love,

The Keira Knightley version is nice, I very much enjoyed Matthew Macfadyen's version of Darcy. I enjoy Colin Firth as well, but for some reason seem to prefer him in a more comedic role. He does comedy so well!

Gwyneth Paltrow does a fine job in Emma but I also enjoyed Kate Beckinsale's version done that same year (made for TV).

Emma Thompson's S&S is also wonderful, but I love anything she does and when you add Alan Rickman to the cast... perfection!

Not to long ago I did a post on my love for Jane Eyre. The Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke version from the 1980's is the only one I have ever seen and I love it. It is considered a gothic novel I believe, so prepare yourself for a darker story than what Austen writes.

Another author that I love who writes in the same vein as Austen and Bronte is Elizabeth Gaskell. I haven't read it yet, but Cranford has come highly recommended. The BBC production of Wives and Daughters is one of my absolute favorites. It is a mini series like P&P so be prepared to commit the time. It is definitely worth it!

Be careful about the 1999 version of Mansfield Park. I've heard that is was a very "free adaptation" with a very 20th century feel. You might find a review first.

Oh, Donna, as wonderful as the P&P movies are (and I have enjoyed both the Keira Knightley version and the Colin Firth version), I heartily recommend that you read Austen's books!!! I loved them and wrote about it on the Book Club forum last year. They were all quick reads. Once I started, I was completely hooked!

I'm enjoying this thread! My daughter and I have recently watched Emma and P&P. This weekend we are heading to my sister's, as she is hosting her tea group for a Jane Austen tea.

My mom is making my daughter this
Regency Dress based on this pattern . The ribbon is blue and we've been practicing our Regency hairstyles all week.

We're excited!

Dh did not read the books, but he enjoys watching all the different movies and versions. Last year he bought BBC Jane Austen Collection. Some are better than others, but most of them are "loyal" to the books.

While A&E P&P is my ultimate favorite, I think I am one of the rare few that like Persuasion. I really like this movie with Amanda Root. Perhaps it echoes a little of my life and that's why I like it? I don't know.

I would like to add that I am a HUGE Colin Firth fan of P&P!!! I was squirming in my seat the whole time I watched the newest P&P, and the liberties they took just made me . I LOVE that book, and I feel when you do a period movie, it needs to be properly put in that time and not given modern twists. For example: when they decide to get married, she is in her nightgown, and that just doesn't feel right to me. The Kate Beckinsale version of Emma is my favorite.

I have never read Mansfield Park or Persuasion, but I enjoy the versions that Jenn mentioned.

When I was in England, we stopped in Bath (oh! so beautiful and symmetrical and calming!), and I felt like I was in one of the Jane Austen novels, and when I see Persuasion, it brings me right back there!

Ditto. I am a huge Colin Firth fan period. I was living in England when the BBC production first came out - the lake scene was headline news for several days - at least it was not negative news huh!!!

My husband got me a set of DVDs for Christmas a couple of years ago - they were all very good. The set was called "The Romance Collection - Literary Classics" - DVDS are:
- Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth one)
- Emma (Kate Beckinsale version)
- Ivanhoe
- Lorna Doone
- Jane Eyre
- Tom Jones
- Victoria and Albert
- The Scaret Pimpernel

I really really enjoyed them. I do have rule though that I always read the book before watching the movie. We have the same rule for the kids too - though read aloud counts.
