Well, my daughter didn't get into Morning Star Camp for this year. They were already full. She's crushed.

She really wants to spend time with some Sisters and also wants to volunteer to do something meaningful. We have a Catholic hospital nearby, and while there are only a handful of nuns on staff, they are wonderful. She's asking about volunteering there for a few hours a week. I see from their website they only allow junior volunteers in the summer.

What have you had your children do for volunteer work? How have you helped them develop a heart for service? She really wants to help people in a hands-on way.

Would she enjoy volunteering at the library? Either church library or public? Or maybe see some seniors and spend time with them?

We've helped out at the local soup kitchen, with the whole family. We've also helped organize and hand out food (again as a family) to homeless folks when we were in PA.

I don't know if she's old enough or interested in Habitat for Humanity, but that's another opportunity we're looking into.

I try to find stuff every now and then at IVolunteer or VolunteerMatch.

Developing a heart for it I think is the easy part. When they see Dad and Mom getting involved then they want to be part of it too. Even our 5-yo and 8-yo enjoyed serving food at the soup kitchen. They were happy to help and I think it opened their eyes a lot to the need around them.... just the fact that for most of those people that was their only meal for the day. It hits them the way reading a book about poverty can't.

I have friends whose daughters have volunteered at the unwed mothers home. Haven't looked into this for our daughter yet though. Maybe when she's a bit older.

My 12 yo volunteers at our local nature center. Once each month, she assists one of the naturalists with a class for preschoolers, which her 4yo sister attends. We went to a very interesting one just today on honeybees. She is really looking forward to being a junior counselor for their weeklong daycamp for 6-8 year olds (which another sister will attend) this summer.

Dh and I look forward to bringing her to DC soon to help serve meals with the Missionaries of Charity in their soup kitchen. We used to do that with teenagers from my youth group when I worked in a parish as a youth minister.

How about an assisted living facility? So many elderly are lonely and would love a sweet, young face to cheer them up. I don't think I would recommend a nursing home, your daughter is so young and those places can sometimes be too sad.
