Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We've started referring to morning snack as elevenses ala Pooh Bear.
Today, when I announced it was time for elevenses everyone ran to the table and started gobbling up fruit and goldfish. Except the 2.5 yo. She started sobbing, as if broken hearted. Really pathetic. When I asked her what was wrong:
"I don't want to eat goldfish. I want to eat elevenses!"

I've just spent 15 minutes trying to convince her elevenses isn't a food, it's a time of day. (Or is it a state of mind? )

Maybe we should just go back to normal, boring snack time.

Jennifer, we call it "second breakfast" a la Lord of the Rings     But some of my kids need the "elevenses" as well!   One meal between breakfast and lunch isn't enough!

Your 2.5 year old sounds like mine!

I'm thinking about putting "second breakfast" or "elevenses" into our schedule for next year. I'm hoping it will help to keep the little ones from getting into the cupboard/fridge while I am working with the big ones. What sort of things do you have for second breakfast or elevenses? I'm hoping to do a better job at keeping things healthy! Morning snacks have tended to be things like granola bars and cookies !

We did this all last year as I was expecting our 4th and I absolutely HAD to eat every 2 hours or so to feel good. My kids get up pretty early so breakfast tended to be long gone by 10:30 or eleven.

Our favorites are apples with a peanut butter/yogurt dip, raisin toast, english muffins or bagels and cream cheese, and sometimes just a second bowl of cereal or fruit.

I try and make sure it's not lunch and then we go out to play a bit and then everyone seems fresh enough to do another hour and a half or so to finish the morning and we'll usually have lunch around 12:30 or 1:00.

Love to hear others snack ideas on this.

We usually do cheese and crackers, or peanut butter on celery (complete with raisins for ants on a log)or veggies with ranch to dip-
I like to include a protein to help them make it through until lunch time. Elevenses usually are around 10 am (and THAT drives my perfectionistic, legalistic 4.5 yo CRAZY) and then we have lunch around 1pm. Teatime is a 4 pm with dinner at 6. We eat frequently in this house.

My kids make toast or sometimes, I start muffins or bread dough in the morning or while making "first breakfast", then the kids eat the finished product when it is ready at about 10 or 11. My 12yo will sit and eat a big bowl of carrots; fruit's always good too. We have cracker and cereal days in our house too.   Or sometimes I make hot cocoa or popcorn.   Yogurt's another possibility.
