Matilda, I have looked at your avatar and thought that it was a picture of an older woman and that there must have been a reason for it - with the discussion about grandmothers recently, I thought that might be the connection between your forum name and avatar - "I've got it all worked out!" I said ....or so I thought.
I just did a search on Padre Pio's quote about praying and not worrying and I wanted to get the exact quote. I found a site that showed your avartar picture! It is Padre Pio!!!! Am I silly, or what???

Oh me too!
I figured "Waltzing Matilda" was an active dance-loving older woman!
I couldn't remember all the words to the song...

That's OK, as long as you didn't think I was the woman in the picture! Although some days I might feel older, I am only 32.
The picture is hard to see clearly, but it is Padre Pio. He is a special patron of mine and has helped us through many rough times. Constant prayer to him is what kept me sane when the kids and I were living with my mother for four months while my husband was 5 hours away working and trying to sell our house.
One of the reasons I love Padre Pio is because he reminds me of my grandpa (only grandpa wasn't nearly as holy). I also have had the privilege of meeting a little girl who received a miracle through his intercession. He was already canonized so her story is not recorded in his cause but she is in at least one if not more medical journals because of her miraculous recovery. I will have to blog about it so that I get the story down before it slips out of my brain (I really doubt it would but just in case).
Thank you for the chuckles!
As far as the song goes, correct me Annie if I am wrong, but I believe Matilda is a sheep and the man who wants to waltz with it is actually trying to steal it. Is that right?

I tell you, I LOVE this forum! This is where I learn more about Australia... (going mad with the emoticons and they ALL apply!)
So back to your interpretation of the characters and their actions in Waltzing Matilda - well I went and did an internet search (wonderful invention..)....and I found the answer to both our wonderings ..and I found this great site!
Who'll Come A Waltzing Matilda With Me?
I am sure if Erin reads this she would be shocked how I'm letting down the intellectual (is inter spelt..er, ur, ar??? oh! it's something that sounds different...tell! thanks dh! ) image of Australian's down - because she is our resident Australian liturature specialist!
So on this site, I found this:
WALTZING MATILDA The act of carrying the ‘swag’ (an alternate colloquial term is ‘humping the bluey’).
Matilda is an old Teutonic female name meaning ‘mighty battle maid’. This may have informed the use of ‘Matilda’ as a slang term to mean a de facto wife who accompanied a wanderer. In the Australian bush a man’s swag was regarded as a kind of de facto wife, hence his ‘Matilda’. (Letter to Rt. Hon. Sir Winston Churchill, KG from Harry Hastings Pearce, 19 February 1958. Harry Pearce Papers, NLA Manuscript Collection, MS2765)
Wow! This is just great!
You know, we ARE just starting our Australian History unit this week, that is to continue to the end of the year - honest! ....So I promise to be better, next time the questions roll in!

Dh was just asking what the thread was about...so I preceeded by first asking him what Matilda's avatar looked like - he didn't miss a heartbeat "Padre Pio!" ...giving me strange looks... ok, I'm back to where I started, feeling really silly again...
What a great thread, we all learnt more about Australia's "unoffical" national anthem and about the powerful intercession of St Pio.

I thought I remembered National Geographic doing an article on "Waltzing Matilda" not too far back. Here is the link.
