We have 2 SMALL bathrooms, but only one with a shower/tub in it in the whole house. The 4 oldest kids are wanting to take more frequent showers which is fine, but I am NOT laundering all those towels every day....we have several towel bars in there already, but not enough, and it is starting to look ridiculous. I thought of putting up a bar or two in the kids' rooms but I'm unsure if it would be okay over carpet. Any ideas for drying several towels in a small amount of space?

We have gotten extra towel hanging space by installing one set of towel bars directly above the first set, a couple of feet higher. I agree, it probably does look ridiculous and the smaller kids aren't able to reach that high. Still, it keeps the towels in the bathroom where they are needed and used and the olders just put their towels on the higher set of bars. I suppose the youngers could use them as well with the aid of a step stool, which is a usual part of a bathroom with small children.

Hope that helps.

Peace,
Nancy

You can also purchase some over the door hangers, for the taller kids (well, I have one myself and I am only 5'1 and a half :). I have one that holds 2 towels right now.

I found it at Bed Bath and Beyond.

We use these large sized hooks for the towels in the children's bathroom. I think you can get more space using hooks, not bars. You can probably get three across the back side of the door and then three more up above. They are supposed to be able to be removed, but we haven't needed to yet. The large size is strong enough to hold a wet towel, but I make sure my kids know not to pull on them or the adhesive might not hold. So far they have stayed up fine!

My MIL (mom to 9) would run the towels through the dryer without washing them all over again just to get them dry. I don't know how often she did a complete washing though.

Forget the bars -- take them out and install a long board with pegs or hooks on it. The towels dry faster hanging on pegs, they don't have to be folded, and you can fit way more towels on one wall this way.

ETA cross posted with Matilda. Anyway, hooks are better than bars.

We use a stainless steel over-the-door hook that hangs down about two feet from the top of the door, and has eight hooks protruding from it - four hooks jutting out to the right and four jutting out to the left (ahem, we like our towels too!) Its too high for the little ones to reach, but it suits us adult folk just fine. I think I paid less than $20 Canadian for it in the bathroom section of a T.J. Maxx-ish type place (it's the same store but it's called 'Winners' here in Canada) Even when it is full of towels, it really doesn't look that bad as the towels are staggered some underneath others...

Hope you find something that works!

When we stayed as a guest at someone's home, and shared a bath, the towel bars(on stands) were in the bedrooms. I thought it nice to put my towels with me(they didn't get lost amongst others' towels) and they did dry by the next shower. The bathroom was less cluttered for the other people staying.
Just another idea

THANK YOU for mentioning HOOKS! I grew up with a towel bar and that was all I could think of to provide now...but of course! I could get six huge hooks in a row mounted to a good sturdy piece of oak and put THAT in place of our main towel bar located on the wall opposite the shower. This will be reachable by even our smallest AND have the added bonus of being reachable without having to step off the bath mat. You all solved my silly little problem. I LOVE these boards!

We love hooks too, just remember to train the kids not to hang on them. We had a whole set pull out of the wall (of our brand new house)last week.

hooks, hooks and more hooks.

If this is any consolation, when I was a teenager, I couldn't fathom the idea of reusing a towel (now they can practically walk themseves to the wash!). One day, my dad couldn't find any, and going to do laundry, pulled thirteen towels out of my closet. I still haven't heard the end of this one!

I agree with the idea of hooks! So many more towels can be hung in much less space.

Also...you really don't need to wash a towel after one use. If the person just showered and dried their clean body, how can the towel be dirty? If it is hung up to dry...and not left in a wad on the floor...it should be fine for more than one use.

I know a mother of three (now grown) who only washed towels once a week. Each member of the family had his/her own towel. She washed them with the sheets every Saturday.

I just went this morning to the Home Depot and bought a lovely white strip of wood with five fabulous hooks. The hooks are extremely "hooky" and I cannot imagine a towel falling off them. In other words, they are not pegs but good steep hooks.....and bonus! Each hook has a mini double hook at the bottom of it so I can even hang robes, swimsuits, coveralls or washcloths!

Thank you to all the hook ladies with all the great hook ideas and hook support. I am looking forward to better days ahead with less "stuff" on the floor and less towel bars on the walls! And "Not Pulling Hard On Hooked Towels" will become the priority topic for the next family meeting. Thanks again. This is RealHelp 4Real!
