Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My neighbors just found out that they are moving to Atlanta and are unfamiliar with the area. I told them I would check here to see if anyone can help suggest areas and parishes etc.

They are looking for a strong faithful parish and a neighborhood that their kids can safely play in the yard etc. I believe they have been told to look in NW Atlanta area...but they do not feel they have to be in Atlanta proper....dh is quite used to a long commute for work and is willing to continue for the sake of his family. Any and all info will be gratefully passed on to a young family. (their kids are 6 and 4 and they were both supposed to go to the local Catholic school so they would probably be interested in any suggestions for Catholic schools too)

thanks so much!

We lived in the Atlanta area (Acworth to be specific) and attended St. Catherine of Siena in Kennesaw. We liked it there and they have a school through 8th grade. It is in the NW area. Be aware, the traffic is AWFUL!!! We live now in Northern Virginia again and people cannot believe it when I say the traffic in Atlanta is worse. I would try to go somewhere at 10 in the morning and still be completely stopped on the freeway. So I wouldn't move to far out if he has to commute downtown. Hope some of this helps.

There is a Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter's in the Atlanta area. Many folks from here (3 hours away) go there as often as possible. Other than that, I am not familiar with the Atlanta area. If they are interested, I can dig up the address of the Priestly Fraternity parish.

I know that there is a parish that has a TLM (indult) in Mableton--outskirts of Atlanta.

I grew up there and visit fairly frequently. I wouldn't move there if you paid me, these days. My folks still are there, and as PP have said, the traffic is HORRIFIC. We usually plan on hittig 285 no later than 3pm EST, cause we know if it's much after that, we'll be STUCK (my parents are in Marietta, right near the junction of 285 and 75, so any of you familiar with the area kwim).

Far enough out to be a decent house price (depending on what you are looking for) is a good long commute. Canton and parts north are cheaper than closer in like Smyrna, Alpharetta, Roswell, and Marietta. Acworth, Woodstock, and the like are also not "cheap". Generally speaking, unless you just luck into something closer in, it's going to be rough.

I don't know of any good Catholic schools in the area I grew up in. Most of the private schools were more downtown at that time (I graduated in 1992, and the only one I can remember is St Pius X...and I know its in a more expensive area close in to town--played their HS soccer team).

I live in Gwinnett County, which is east of Atlanta. Anything inside 285 (our beltway) is pretty expensive.
My area is not too bad. We are in Lilburn, near Stone Mountain. There are certainly lots of new homes that are expensive but older homes in good school districts are reasonable, esp. when compared to other areas of the country. We are getting ready to move outside of Baltimore, and from what I've seen online, will probably have to spend twice what we are now for the same house!

St. John Neumann is a regional school here, meaning that they aren't tied to the parish and are completely independent, accepting students from all different area parishes. However, it is pretty difficult to get accepted, although someone moving here who has already been in Catholic school would have preference, even over someone here on the waiting list. SJN parish is a very large parish with a lot of activities - we attended there for many years. For the last 3 yrs though we've been members of a much smaller parish that we love - St. Stephen the Martyr. - wonderful Irish priest for a pastor (Fr. Paddy)- he ends every Mass with the prayer to St. Michael, as it used to be done for decades.

I grew up in the Decatur area and there are some nice churches but I wouldn't recommend living there - expensive now and high crime also in that county.
