Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted this on my blog, but Cay made me think it might be good to mention it here.

Just as an FYI to any Knights, wives of Knights or daughters of Knights, or anyone who just thinks their hats are cute... today is the 125th anniversary of their founding.

You can read more about it here.

Neat Matilda!

I'm glad you posted this -- we usually go to St. Mary's in New Haven for Easter Sunday Mass. I'm glad you told us about the big celebration so we could talk to the boys about it ahead of time!

And growing up, I worked in the K. of C. big "tootsie roll" building in New Haven for summer work throughout high school and college. I'm really grateful to the Knights for all the opportunities that they gave me.

And it's where my parents met.

I'm glad Matilda posted about it. My father, father-in-law, and husband are all KCs and are all past grand knights. I had no idea today was a memorial day.    I wonder if my dh knows.

Maryan,
I had to laugh at this. My sons used to go with their PawPaw to the football games and grocery store to help pass out tootsie rolls with the KCs.

In my second son's school keepsake book there is a line for each year that says: "When I grow up I want to be ____________."

And you fill in the line.

When my second son was in Pre-School I was filling out his book and when I asked him this question he said, "A Tootsie Roll man".    And that's exactly what I have written in his keepsake book.

I'll have to tell him that there is a job for him in "KC Tootsie Roll" business.      Who knew?!

Oh Cay

And you can show him a picture of the "Supreme" K of C headquarters -

image of K of C building

Doesn't it look like a tootsie roll... or 4 of them??

Cay,

Sounds like a good reason to break open one or two or 3 Musketeer bars. They wore funny hats, too!

Our diocesan paper had write up about the anniversary so it was fresh in my mind.

Parish Priest: Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism is a very engaging biography of the founder of the Knights of Columbus. The founding of the knights has very humble beginnings and it's amazing it ever made it. McGivney's persistence was amazing. I learned so much not only about McGivney and the Knights but about the immigrant population of the US in the 1800's and the rise of Catholisim in America.

Good rabbit trails from this:
Immigrants in US (1800's)
Importance of life insurance - what happened to poor widows and orphans in the 1800's?
Columbus - why the name for the knights?
