All the food talk and budget talk has made me wonder...
Who grates their own cheese? Is it tons cheaper than buying shredded??? And we use cheese A LOT!
I buy shredded cheese, and I do buy in bulk and freeze bags of it until I need it. But if I would be saving a lot, I might switch. However, if it's not tons cheaper, I'd rather save myself the hassle!
Any advice? Opinons?

Maryan, I know my Pampered Chef consultant would say it's "healthier" to grate your own cheese, and there are some handy tools to make it easier. There are added ingredients to keep the cheese from sticking that aren't too palatable.
As far as cheaper, it seems that it would be to buy a block of cheese than the extra step. I can't say, because we don't *do* cheese here except on rare occasions.

I do remember hearing that from our favorite pampered chef expert ...
However, since we eat PB&J everyday, you can bet I'm not motivated by my palate -- except for dessert, of course!
I remember TRYING to compare block of cheese prices with shredded - but it required more math than my brain could compute with my lively boys in the cart!

I do shred our own cheese, and I think it's cheaper, but I'll tell ya why. I buy it in blocks and freeze the blocks, I keep one or two blocks in the fridge. When we need cheese I take it out and shred some right at that time, by hand. I am inclined to use less that way! LOL!

When we used to use a lot of cheese, I did the same thing as Lisa. Organic cheese at the co-op was cheaper that way. Or if I was feeling particularly industrious, I ran the blocks through my food processor the day I got the cheese so it's nice and fresh, then packed into smaller Ziploc bags and stored in the freezer.

I haven't compared prices,I've just assumed buying blocks is cheaper. We buy a huge block of cheddar every week or so plus mozzarella for Friday pizzas. I grate it with the Kitchen Aid attachment in only a few minutes. I freeze the mozzarella in "pizza sized" baggies. The cheddar stays in the fridge until it's gone.

Don't assume.. I KNOW for a fact that I can buy a 2 lb bag of shredded cheese for the same price as the 2 lb block. Some might.. and if you have other options.. but what I get is lucerne brand on sale at safeway (cause I surely don't save money spending $100 to fill the van and drive to the town that has any other options). So since it saves me no money, I buy what saves me labor
It says that it has potato starch, corn starch and calcium sulfate added to prevent caking and natamycin as a natural mold inhibitor.

Jodie, It's my laziness that saves us money! I get tired of shredding and use less cheese! LOL!

Lisa - lack of cheese here constitutes a state of emergency

Jodie -- are you sure you don't live in my house?
We're all cheese heads here and if a doctor ever told us someone couldn't eat cheese I don't know what we'd do!
I buy the pre-shredded when it's on sale (and I stock up), else I use block. But the problem with the block is that the kids cut "big" chunks and we go through more and quicker than we would if I have shredded.
Bottom line -- I buy what's cheapest and go with that....

We always buy cheese in blocks. I think ready grated is quite a recent innovation here (and as I do almost all my grocery shopping online, I miss out on all the innovations -- it's a very good thing )

At Sam's Club the shredded mozz is the same price as the block mozz. So, I buy the large bag of shredded and separate it, then freeze.
Cheddar, Colby, etc.......even at Sam's club the shredded is signif more expensive. So, I buy blocks at Sam's Club or on-sale-at-grocery store, shredd it all at once and freeze in portions.
