One of my first "ah ha" moments that I had entered another world - the over 40 world - was when I had to get glasses for the first time. The eye doctor quiped, "Ya, these are your over-40 specs. Everything is just breaking down." No, I didn't go back to her again .
Soon I need to go for my third pair of glasses. The first two were/are plain, smallish metal frames. I'm thinking that I want something different but I don't want to get some glasses and look like a woman who is trying to look hip (as if I could!)
What do your over-40 specs look like? Oh ya...I might need, gulp, bi-focals this time...wow.
Love,

My eyes have defnitely been screwy since this last baby (conceived right when I turned forty). I havne't been yet to find out the verdict. I'm nearsighted since I was ten and wear glasses/contacts. Because I only have one ear, all my glasses sit crooked on my face. I'm not sure what Im going to do when she tells me I need reading glasses and far vision glasses! Right now, I'm noticing that I need more light than I used to and I am moving things a bit further from me when I read. When I chicked out the drugstore reading glasses though, I definitely didn't need those yet. Is the light thing age?

My over 40 specs look like the old lady reading glasses at WalMart--because they are I never thought I would have to wear them "out." When I grocery shop I used to have ds read labels for me. Now ds goes to the activity center and I NEED help. Or my glasses. Which I really am not ready to bring to public yet. And...I need one of those "strings" to hang them around my neck. Especially when grocery shopping. I am having fun with this...I am so glad I can laugh at some of the things happening as I age. A few years ago I would not have had such a good sense of humor about these changes.

I'm on over 40 specs and have these frames, which I think look better on me than they do in the picture
Elizabeth - I've worn glasses for shortsightedness since I was a teen, but now I'm on my second pair of varifocals. Apparently after a certain age the eye muscles(?) deteriorate and your eyes no longer alter focus from long to short properly - so you end up with bi- or vari-focals ... or two pairs of glasses. I tried that for a while, and don't recommend it! Dh went the same way a little ahead of me, being a little older.

You can get contact lenses that allow for distance and close work. The lens for one eye is under-corrected for distance for distance, so you can do close-up work.
I've tried them, and liked them. You may need to give it a second or so when going from reading to long distance, but it isn't difficult.
My problem has been with dryness - it made contacts uncomfortable (though I wore them for years and years at one point).

Tami, is there a name for the kind of contacts you are talking about?
I have been wearing glasses and/or contacts since I was 5 -- yes, that would be 40 years now! Over the last year I have noticed that with my contacts I can *see* far away just fine, but I have to hold my hand 10" from my face to look at my fingernails! (yes, I just checked with a ruler... )
I do have glasses for in the evening, and I actually have to take them off in order to read a book!

My eyes are fine. I don't need glasses. The fact that I can't read anything more than a foot away means nothing.

Paula, I'm sure there is, I just don't know the name of it!
My eye-care provider is the one who suggested it, because I wanted lenses for distance, but didn't want glasses for reading. I was trying to avoid the glasses on-and-off routine.

Don't be afraid of bifocals! They make them now without visible lines between the two parts, so nobody needs to know!
Or maybe, instead of getting glasses for up-close work, we should all just work on growing longer arms!
Peace,
Nancy

I have a year to go to officially be on this forum. But .... I have worn very strong glasses/contacts since I was 8. After Matt was born 3 years ago my eyes would not take contacts - so I have worn glasses full time. Last year I decided that if I have to wear glasses I was not going to get inconspicuous ones - so I got some black plastic ones - which you definitely see!!!
Good luck in your frame choice!

OK -- first let me admit that I tend to be just a tad vain about my eyes ! I've worn glasses since 6th grade and switched to contacts after undergrad ... I WON'T go outside with glasses on (unless they're sunglasses of course ) and will do whatever I have to do to keep wearing contacts -- I wear the extended, gas permeable and so far, no problems at all.
That said, the last few years I was starting to wear those cheapy, reading glasses from Walmart...just to read at night and rarely (if ever) in PUBLIC! Since I moved to Colorado -- and I'm not kidding -- I haven't needed the reading glasses! Isn't that weird?
So I guess all you fine ladies just need to come move here

First of all, moving to CO sounds great to me!!
I wonder if the change in your eyes is an altitude thing? Very curious!

Well shortly after my 40th bday 3 years ago I had to have new glasses, bifocals. I went to Target to get my glasses and they are pretty "hip" looking (is that the correct term now? ) My kids were standing across the store giving thumbs up and down as I tried them on. Then when I went to pick them up,boy o boy, did they have a good laugh! It is not easy walking in bifocals. But it doesn't take long to get use to them. I love mine. But now 3 years later I need stronger ones. So sometime in the next month I will be going to the eye doc myself. And hoping I can find something "hip" if the money is there I like to get 2 pairs one kind of sporty and another more elegant pair. Yes, vanity!

I had worn contact lenses from the time I was 19 for distance vision. My close vision started going when I was 35. I would wear reading glasses but only for extended reading.
About 10 years ago, I was no longer able to wear contact lenses. My eyes were to dry and they just ended up being a major irritation. So I purchased biofocal glasses. They are the smaller frames, black plastic with no line. And yes, at first it was hard to get used to wearing them.
I used to just wear them when I was out and about, but now I really need them to read labels at the store and even to watch a movie at home. I still wear my "drug store" reading glasses when reading and now, as I sit here typing at the computer!

You are giving me courage! I am due for my eye exam, and a year and a half ago, my eye doc suggested I could try the bifocals- and yes they didn't have a line, etc., but I just couldn't bring myself to get them! Vanity, oh Vanity!
I am just beginning to "see" a need to get them. My only concern is, for those who wear bifocals, is the line at a good point so that when you are needing to see far, the lower portion doesn't interfere, and vice versa? I remember when my Auntie got her first bifocals, and she kept complaining how hard it was to read, but she was just about looking over the top of the glasses!
I've worn contacts/glasses since 6th grade, so I am used to them. Just not the bifocal angle. I haven't worn contacts for a few years now, but would like to go back to them- but I have an astigmatism, and the doc said, at that time, that they would be difficult to fit.
Oh well!

That was what I was so worried about with bifocals that I would have this "line" (though no actual line on glasses) that would cause problems from looking far away to close up. But I have not had any problems never really noticed a difference after the first few days. But my eyes at the time were just bad enough for glasses so don't know if a stronger lens will make a differnce.
I know when they said bifocals I paniced!! I said how big of glasses do I need. I was worried I would have to wear this big old 80's looking glasses. The girl laughed and said I could get almost any pair! Yep, vanity is hard to deal with at times.

I have worn glasses since I was 7. My prescription is very strong. I switched to contacts when I turned 15 and have wear them ever since. I wear the gas permeable ones. Last year I started having trouble with dryness. The doctor prescribed Restasis. It has helped a lot with the comfort.
Last year I started noticing that I could read small print with my contacts. I found myself having to hold things far away. I bought one of those "over the counter" glasses but they are too strong for me. The doctor says that my eyes are not quite ready for bifocals. But they are coming!

well crud....I was trying to find a pic of my reading glasses online but they aren't there. I got reading glasses a couple of years ago, after perfect vision previously. I am on my third pair, because I keep losing them.
They are black, small elongated oval glasses with....RHINESTONES on them. Almost look as if they are right out of a Far Side cartoon. I will try to post a pic of them on my blog and show y'all.
