Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to challenge myself to keep growing ( mentally and spiritually) even though I am getting older. I am looking for a book , or blog, or something, that will challenge me to do better, especially in the area of living out my faith. The fact is, that even after all these years, I'm not very advanced in virtue. Any suggestions?

I have enjoyed (for myself as well as my teens) the blog posts at Life Teen. I'm not sure if it's just what you want. I liked them on facebook and see them that way. But they tend to be current so that you're getting good info on topics that you're hearing in multiple locations.

Anything Mother Teresa wrote. She spoke plainly though she knew her theology well. If you want a little more lofty, though still manageable by a frazzled homeschool mom, try books by convert,Thomas Howard.

I recommend all the books by Father Jacques Philippe. Very practical and succinct.

His book on the spirituality of St. Therese is amazing. My favorite book is "I Believe in Love" and Father Philippe's book really captures the spirit of that book.

I also love reading the series "In Conversation with God" by Father Fernandez. Each day has 3 meditations to read, and always directly aimed at spiritual growth. So powerful!

At the Catholic Digest
website, you can sign up to receive the daily Quiet Moment post via e-mail.

The is usually a quote from a saint or the Catechism or some other pertinent source, and the quotes follow the liturgical year.

I love these- often I am short of time and can't read a whole blog post, but these short quotes give me something to ponder all day.

You could also sign up for Mary Vitamin, which is also a sent out via e-mail and has beautiful mediations on Our Lady.

A Holy Experience blog http://www.aholyexperience.com/ and the book 1000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Each day thinking of the gifts that the Lord has given us. Keeping a journal with things so little yet so precious such as:
"Little hands making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich" (my youngest in the kitchen)
"A choir of geese, spring peepers and morning doves" (my early morning walk)
"6 heads bowed in a church pew" (At mass on Sunday)

There is 1000 gift app and uploaded on my iphone to jot down or photograph each precious gift.

As an FYI to those who do not know, Ann Voscamp's book is written to help nourish joy and be mindful of God's presence in our daily life especially in little things. It is a good thing to do this. Her writing could be classified as catholic with a small "c" because it is using universal principles, but she is not a Catholic, and the devotion is not a particular Catholic devotion.

I see that you asked for reading material but wanted to add some other things that have helped me grow and live my faith, especially these past few years.

I set aside time each week to meet one-to-one with a friend. I'm blessed with several close friends so I get to see each of them for breakfast or lunch on a regular basis. I am constantly amazed at how swiftly God's grace and clarity shine through my friends! We talk about everything and it always comes back to virtue...how we can grow in patience, kindness, hope, love, etc. We both come away renewed and inspired.

I also choose a virtue to put into practice in the world. Simple stuff like, "I will smile while shopping today." These simple and doable things have helped me to grow virtue within by practicing in a variety of environments outside of my home.

Rooting for you!

Love,

"Fire Within" and "I Believe in Love" would also be my top two recommendations.
