Happy birthday!
And yep, just keep on keeping on. I find I'm much happier when I don't think that being a "lady of a certain age" means that I'm any different, fundamentally, from the lady I was ten years ago.
I still kind of crack up when I remember a teaching colleague of mine years ago who had gone to the gynecologist around her 40th birthday. A friend and I -- at 22 and 23 we were the babies of the English department -- happened upon her in the teacher's lounge, where she was reading a brochure the doctor had given her.
"Well," she said, "now that I'm in the F-years, apparently all I get to do is have hot flashes and grow a beard."
Oh, we thought, but she's so BRAVE.
Because we weren't going to have to think about those terrible things for a long, long, long time. Which I guess was true, but it sure seems to have happened really fast -- so fast, in fact, that there hasn't been time to feel like that different a person from the one I was then.
Sally, who has had the hot flashes, but not the beard so much, thank heavens
