Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Returning to being a mother of a toddler and aiming at home school again after thinking that that state in life is over is an interesting twist.

Are there many home schooling moms of small ones in the over 40 crowd?

Hi, Ann,

I am almost 54. I had my twins at 44 and my last son when I was almost 46. At that time, I had two in college and four others at home from first to ninth grade. Your not the only "older" mom here.

I'm sure it must be challenging to have a toddler after being out of the "baby business" for so many years!

Welcome to the forum. You will enjoy the lovely ladies and wonderful ideas here!

I'm surprised by how well I am adjusting to having another small child. Hubby is marvelous and very very involved so that has made a difference. He was the stay at home parent while I finished up grad school, I was pumping milk at school so he could feed breastmilk by bottle while I was gone.

Do you find home school to be different from when you were younger?

I have noticed I am less ambitious yet it seems my small one is learning just fine.

I have less energy, yet it doesn't seem to be harming our toddler.

I just had baby #6 and I am 46. What a blessing he has been. I don't have any in college yet, but one heading in that direction in another year.
Some days, I love the idea that I will be homeschooling for another 16-18 years. Some days, it causes me to lament! All in all though, I have to say I am peaceful that this is my lot in life. I think for a while I kept thinking of what I would do when my kids are grown. Going back to college, getting my teaching certificate updated, buying new clothes for "work" etc. But then I realized I had to just embrace the idea that a "homeschool mom" is what I am and always will be!    After embracing that idea I now am quite content and quite fulfilled in my role. I even hope my grandkids are homeschooled so I can help out if I'm needed.

Yes, I have a four year old. I will be 49 this week. (How did that happen?) My oldest is graduating college and getting married in June. Next year I will have 2 in college.   I feel like it is almost a second chance to do things better/different than I did the first time around! Enjoy!

My 6 are spread between 15 and 29; 2 oldest are married, #3 engaged, #'s 4 and 5 in college;

The whole homeschool *scene* is so different with the youngers than it was with the first two (or 3). Much more available to do, more other people homeschooling, a broader range of people and activities. I feel more certain of who I am (at 57) and more free to make the choices that are best for our family (with my one last highschooler). I don't have to get caught up in forcing ourselves into a mold because there are only 3 other homeschoolers (or something) so we all have to be lock-step with one another.

We're not getting older, we're getting better.....

Peace,
Nancy

Hello Ann,

I will be 48 soon, and I have 8 ~ from 27 to 4.

The oldest two are married, #3 is engaged and starting grad school this summer. The ones still at home will be starting K, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th grade this August. I also have five grandchildren (and am expecting two more this year) who live in our town.

It's a season of life with many challenges, but like all the others, comes with much sweetness and many blessings.

There are many moms in your shoes on this forum, and I'm sure that you'll gain much wisdom from their discussions.

Blessings,
Laureen in Virginia

Im 47 and have 9 children; ages 24 to 1...Sounds like I am teaching ratios

My oldest has graduated, have 2 in college, and a 16, 13, 11, 7, 4, and 1 year old.

While I am adjusting to this stage of having adult children, I am finding relating to the older ones more difficult than I had thought. All live at home and it is hard to keep a handle on discipline with the younger ones while respecting the older ones are adults with their own ideas and paths.

As far as homeschooling, I have about 17 years to go. I think I am needing some outside stimulus of some kind. I am getting this "Gee, I've done THIS before" attitude. I attended a homeschooling conference this year. While the speakers were helpful to the newbies, I didn't get much from the talks. So at the end of the summer, I'm packing up the baby and a teen or two and heading to the Chesteron conference in St. Louis. I think this is what I need to charge my batteries to be a better homeschooling mom. I hope so. I am slowing down, but I have seen this happen to some of my older friends. They have slowed down too much and seriously neglected educating the younger ones. My 7 year old has a serious learning disability, something I have not had to deal with previously. Twenty years ago, I probably would have attacked this problem with vigor. Now it seems it is just one more thing on my ever-increasing list. So I have to put "stuff" in perspective. This is where it gets tough.....who gets my time when a little time or a few words might make a large difference.

Blessings,
Stephanie

My eldest was LD. Home school is what made that child's college possible. If the public schools had had their way the kid would be flipping burgers for life.

Lots of moms in their 40's on here. LOL!

Now, how many have a 19 year gap between their youngest two and thought that meant they were done when the older ones hit college?
