I cannot believe how much my hormones have changed in the past few years. I feel like I turn into a whole different person during TOM. I was a mad woman and I could not help myself.
Is there something I can be doing? Will progestrone cream help? Vitamins? A strait jacket and tape over my mouth?

Mary Chris,
I am right there with you. I will be 42 soon and the last 1 1/2 years has been crazy. I am either a screaming mad women or a weepy teen. I have tried progesterone cream, which helped a bit and also a herb called Vitex. Do some reading on both. I am also trying to eat better, exercise, and sleep more. That does help some.

I just bought progesterone cream yesterday. I read about estrogen dominance on the web, and I have many of the signs. My chiro. is of the belief that menopause characteristics aren't natural and are only there b/c our hormones aren't balanced. I've been searching my area for a homeopathic dr. that can test my levels and give me some natural supplements and solutions. I've been having hot flashes at night for the last week. Without giving TMI, one day last week during TOM, I could hardly leave the house. AAACCKK! I'm not ready for this, especially since my 10 1/2 yr old dd seems to be experiencing her own set of hormonal issues!

B-complex, and I think I need to get back on the progesterone cream too.

Mary Chris,
I turned 42 last month and my family knows there is a certain week that I become a bear. And I usually apologize at the end of each day.
I told my dh last week that there are some times that having four females in the same house under the same roof is "not" a good thing.

Mary Chris, I've been weeping and irritable and blue and despondent so much lately I almost came to post something...and here you are echoing it all. Taking notes....

lurking here but AVOID THE SOY!! in any products. this only excaberates the estrogen dominance. yes to B's, to Progesterone cream, no to sugars, white carbs. Try adding fish oil and one extra green leafy vegetable each day.
you will feel better!!

I am nearly 44 and not exactly looking forward to this.
I am still nursing with no TOMS, but I feel like a bear since my little guy thinks nursing should be an all night affair...as in ALL night
But my mother says Black Cohash helped her the most with hot flashes
Has anyone else used this?
Blessings,
Stephanie

I keep wondering what I can expect in the future. So far my perimenopause has been pretty easy. The major changes I have had is that my periods are physically easier (in general) and a little harder emotionally. I now get somewhat anxious and sad just before my cycle. They are also slightly less regular. I can tell I'm less fertile, and my female hormones are lessening. Does it get harder as you go along? My mother had cycles until she was 56 so I am expecting at least a few more years....
In Christ,
Deborah

Oh Ladies! I am the Queen of hormonal troubles! On my resume, I have had the lovely experience of going through menopause twice! Once in my 20's, as I was pharmacuetically put into menopause for 6 months. Then, I had a complete hysterectomy at 40yo. I am now 42, and am still trying to get balanced.
I have tried all of the above, and what I can tell you briefly(Ican come back to this later with some book references), is that while the progesterone cream may help for awhile, the ultimate goal *should* be what is called "Cyclic hormone regualtion."
If there is a book out there on peri/menopausal/post, I have probably read it. The hands down, best, yet most radical book is called _S*x,Lies,and Menopause_ by T.S. Wiley(Susie Wiley). The S*x refers to gender. I am now following what is referred to as The Wiley Protocol, under a MD who is passionate about hormones and women. If you google the book and the author, you will get a bunch of cr@p. Take it with a grain of salt. This protocol MUST be followed/monitered by a MD who is Wiley trained.
FYI-I battled Endometriosis(once thought of as an estrogen dominance disease-now many believe it is an immuno-defiency disease) since my teens, endured several surgeries, went to naturopaths, chiros, acupuncturists, chinese medicine, and much, much more. IOW, I HBTDT!
Be back when i have more time.....oh! and yes! to what Lisa said-stay away from soy.
Christy

..still waiting to hear of some miraculous help (aside from prayer )
- I am trying blackcurrant oil caps, extra Vitamin B and extra magnesium as well as my prenatal - have not noticed any improvement
OB said lots of sleep, complex carbs and exercise (and running after a toddler does not count as exercise)

I'm here for you I just turned 48 and the last two years (before that was a miscarriage and in 2004 I had a baby and nursed for 3 years) have been up and down. Depression and anxiety have been intermittent as well as hot flashes and extreme memory loss (what I consider extreme). What has helped me most has been (mass and Adoration are a given, right?) 2 Flax oil capsules and 1 Evening Primrose oil capsule in the a.m. and 1 Flax/2 Evening Primrose in the p.m. along with my B Complex, Calcium w/Magnesium and several 1000mg. Vit.C/day. At least my immune system is strong

these vitamins etc sound good for how I am feeling these days.Gwen do you take your B vitamins am or pm. Also when do you take Vit.C. I have started taking evening primrose again and deep sea fish oil but I didn't know whether I should take flax seed oil tabs as well. Can you take too much of fat soluble(excuse me if I've got the term wrong...hope you know what I mean!)vitamins and also should you eat them with a fat so that they are properly absorbed.I'm definately not a food person in the morning(yes very bad I know)but seem to make up for it later in the day(sigh).A friend sugested low level antidepressants for a while but I am really wanting to change how I feel without them...if i can.
bless you for this great thread

Hi Alison.....I tried to get here before closing time Saturday and missed out.
I have been wondering about taking more fish oil along with the flax and evening primrose. Anyone have an opinion?
I usually take Acidopholus in the morning, so I don't start my other vitamins until later. I do have a pretty strong stomach but still can't take vitamins without breakfast--and I usually eat around 10a.m.
I take 1 B-Complex in the a.m. and one after dinner. Same with the 1000mg. Vit. C and I try to take a couple more Cs throughout the day.
I always take my Calcium (with Magnesium) at bedtime because I was told that by ?? (somebody I can't remember). BTW, this is also supposed to be good for dc who have a hard time winding down and going to sleep at night.
The flax is 2 in the a.m., 1 in the p.m. and evening primrose is 1 in the a.m. with 2 in the p.m. In addition to being a little better with the depression, I seem to be a little more clear-headed these days (to the definite advantage of my kids' education!! ).
I hope that helps.

Thank you so much for sharing this Gwen.I am feeling a lot better since starting a vitamin regime. But aside from feeling better my skin has improved dramatically! Prior to this I have had for the last few months exceedingly dry and itchy hands and face(which I would scratch and end up with weepy sores...not nice on your eyelids!) but not any more! I am so glad and so are my dc as mum can now be added to the dishwashing schedule!!

I just did some catch-up reading of this thread. I have been thinking that I need to begin some kind of vitamin protocol. The issues I'm having are similar to some posted here... anxiety and mild depression. Although physically, my cycle is actually easier, emotionally it is getting worse! I think I am going to look into some the supplements Gwen is using. It is nice to get first-hand advice from someone who has had some success.

Vitamin B Complex has helped my sister and I tremendously while going through this time in our lives. I'll be 44 in November, and when she was my age, we almost lost her to hormonal imbalance, I'm convinced of it. I feel like I literally battled satan for her soul at that time (long story).
At any rate, after that, I started taking Vitamin B and have taken it consistantly, because I will NOT allow that to happen to me. It was a horrible time period for our family.
I will read more of this, I'm really not at all versed on vitamins, remedies, etc. All I know is that VITAMIN B COMPLEX has worked WONDERS for us!
