Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Miraculous Medal

We are reading this story at prayer time right now... it is so wonderful!
I had never read the whole story of how the Miraculous Medal came into being prior to this.

It is an amazing... I never realized the whole connection with St. Vincent de Paul.

I am struck by St. Catherine's humility... she cheerfully worked in the kitchen while everyone was trying to figure out who the star nun was.
She also talked to OUr Lady face to face for two hours... Our Lady sat in a chair across from her. That gives me goose bumps. Can you imagine two hours with Our Lady? Wow.

St. Catherine is such an inspiration! I totally agree Melinda. Her ability to keep her secret is amazing.

For my personal reading (and I think I read this book 3 times), I've turned to Fr. Dirvin's book on St. Catherine. It is published by Tan books but EWTN seems to have the book at their site: St. Catherine Laboure

I put together a play for my children to act out the story of the conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne as a result of the Miraculous medal:

Here's a link to our at home production.

I've been meaning to begin a "virtue of Mary" thread for April. St. Catherine could be our inspiration for the month.
So far we have...

Cheerful work
humility
closeness to Mary
guarding the hidden life

I just finished reading the Vision book on St. Catherine the other day, in preparation for our Little Flowers meeting this week, which spotlights her and the Miraculous Medal.

Also, you may already know this but she is one of the incorrupt saints - her body is on display in a glass coffin and looks very "fresh" and recent, from pictures I've seen.

Isn't it interesting that St. Bernadette is also incorrupt, and both these saints spent a lot of time in the presence of Our Lady? Could there be some connection there?

Helen- thanks for all the links. I wasn't expecting to find the whole book right there on line. That is great.

Another virtue I thought of was obedience...
St. Catherine did everything Mary told her to do. But I also have been pondering Fr. Aladel's reaction... how he agonized over the right course of action and then finally gave in and obeyed Our Lady's request.
He didn't want her mad at him.   We all know it's no good when mom is mad...

I have to come back to add that since we are reading the MM story, my dc have started saying that they wish they could have a medal of their own to wear.

In addition, my mother saw the book and mentioned that she would like a new MM for Mother's Day... she wants a simple pewter one that is sturdy and doesn't have to be polished or treated too gently.

I got right on line and ordered three pewter medals, hoping they would arrive before Mother's Day. I have had such bad luck lately with on line orders that I was sure they would never make it, especially since I just chose regular shipping (as I have found that paying extra for quick shipping rarely works).

Of course, Our Lady took care of that right away. I ordered the medals (with chains) on Thursday evening late... probably around 10:30 pm.
In my mailbox today at 2 pm (Saturday) guess what was there?

Melinda, I haven't tried the Windeatt book as a read aloud to my kids. I think I will if it had such great results with your children! I'm glad your medals arrived and so quickly.

I'm telling you, the Blessed Mother is tops. I love how she is so organized!
You need something- she's on it, even before you know you need it!

I had to take my dd to the lab today for her bloodwork (every six months- and never my favorite day). Last time we had to wait over an hour, and she has to fast for this test, so.....

This time we turned it over to Our Lady. We got to the lab (this is Friday morning), and there was no one at all in the waiting room. We were in and out in ten minutes.

When we went back to the car, there was a little silver car parked right up next to mine so that we had to slide in between and be careful opening the door. As I was helping dd strap into her car seat I happened to notice a car magnet on the silver car's gas tank.

Of course, it was the MIraculous Medal, complete with the prayer going around the edges of the oval. I mean, WHAT are the chances?

Mama Mary is amazing!! I love what you said about her being ORGANIZED. I've known that in the back of my head, but for some reason that hit me this morning. Thank you.

If we can learn about Our Lady's daily habits from the example of the saints (and I think we can), St. Maximilian Kolbe kept an incredibly ordered desk. Saint Maximilian's special charism is assimilation into the Immaculate, I think it is reasonable to suggest that Our Lady would have kept an organized desk as well.
