I posted this earlier in the wrong place. (Sorry!) I need some help making a decision and maybe some advice on how to implement it.
I am trying to convert a couple of all-white flower girl dresses into Easter dresses. I have a couple of options.
I could just add flowers and/or petals. I could add a new colorful sash. I could add a new colored underskirt which would be the most sewing intensive, but would also make the biggest change. The dresses are very thin polyester satin on top and bottom with two layers of tulle over the skirt. Any thoughts? Any advice? Anyone want to talk me out of it?
I tried to post a picture, but couldn't so you can see the dresses and get more details
here.

I think I'd do a different colored sash.. I like little girls in white dresses.. very traditional.. makes me think of "My Favorite Things" - "girls in white dresses, with blue satin sashes"
The dresses are so pretty and simple I'd hate to change that.

Matilda -
What lovely dresses! I second the colored (pastel) satin sashes. You might be able to also scatter some silk flowers in a matching color over the skirts (kind of like the lavender ones you linked to).
Will you post pictures of the end result?
Peace,
Nancy

JodieLyn,
My girls love The Sound of Music. I am sure as soon as I mention it, they will both want blue sashes!
hylabrook1,
I will try to post them here if I can figure out how by then otherwise I will post them on the blog.
Thank you both for your suggestions. I am leaning towards the colorful sash idea. I think I need to go to the fabric store and play around with some of these ideas.

No apologies necessary -- I shouldn't have deleted it when I tried to move it. So I'm sorry, but glad you were able to resurrect it!

Matilda,
I love the dresses -- sashes would help or little colored flowers or ribbon as edging on the hem, waist and maybe a bit at the neck.
These are gorgeous! Have fun and please post a picture when you're done....

I JUST finished 2 flower girl dresses for my twins and will use them for Easter. The dresses are ivory with mocha sashes, and I will take off the sashes and replace them with lavendar (the girls' choice) sashes. I also plan on getting cardigans in ivory or lavendar.
Funny, I told my niece (the bride) if she had chosen white, I would have had flower girl-Easter-First Communion dresses all in one fell swoop!
I also made the cutest little dress with the flower petals in the skirt for my great-niece to wear. It is ivory on top, with a yellow satin skirt and ivory sparkle tulle overskirt. The petals inside are a creamy white with pinkish centers.
I'd go the sash-change route. All those gathers on the little dress took longer than the other 2 dresses combined!
Good luck, whatever you choose!

I love the sash idea but I would take it one step further and make "aprons." A blue sash with perhaps blue netting attached to really change it up without having to do major sewing. Simply make the sash with the "apron" attached and then you can always take that off when they make first communion and you are set
Just a thought!

Here's a link to a post on my knitting blog for a capelet/shrug that I made for my 7 yod's FHC (which is sleeveless)....she'll also wear this outfit (without the head piece) to her cousin's wedding in June!

Thank you all for the awesome suggestions. I am intrigued by the apron idea and will look into it. Unfortunately I don't knit, but I do crochet although I have never crocheted clothing, just scarves, potholders and lots of blankets. I like the shrug idea and have a pattern for a shrug by Simplicity that I might read through. I have played around with some fabric that the girls picked (pink for one and purple for the other). A bunched sash seems to look the best. I will post pictures as I make progress (if I actually make progress) on my blog and please keep the suggestions coming in case these don't work out. I love this place!

Matilda, those dresses are very pretty - look at these trims available at Farmhouse Fabrics - they are a bit pricey but you wouldn't need much - I'm thinking just around the neckline and then a satin ribbon sash to coordinate. silk satin trims
please post a pic of the revised dresses

They were flower girl dresses that the bride picked out. I was planning to put a shrug or sweater on them for Mass (my girls want to make sure they are modest) but the weather here might make keeping them on afterwards uncomfortable.

OK... I am looking at my last post and rolling on the floor. We had snow flurries all day Holy Saturday. No, they didn't wear sweaters...THEY WORE THEIR WINTER COATS!
Thank you for all of your suggestions. I was going to post this on Palm Sunday, but didn't make it before the cut-off.
My girls looked beautiful and they loved the dresses. Even my youngest daughter is a bit more tom-boyish than her sister.
I ended up making a very long sash that wrapped around their waist and over their shoulders.
You can see pictures here. (I still don't know how to put a picture in a post.)

Matilda,
I love the sashes!
I also love your blog -- and have added it to my list of "regulars" to check....thanks!
ETA: We had snow here too on Easter morning so no nice little summer dress for Maggie -- who was in tears in her turtleneck, leggings and ugly old dress while EVERYONE had new dresses (ok, maybe just the little girl sitting behind us). My poor Maggie -- as we also told her there was Easter Bunny and that Mom and Dad bring the treats! Poor little 7 yog
