Okay we just moved and I discovered we have roaches

Right this moment it is 2:30am and I can't sleep knowing they are in the kitchen!! I went out there to surprise attack with my flashlight and a wad of paper towels. I saw two adults and managed to kill, with the trusty paper towels, about five babies. That's all I saw...but I know that still means there are more!!! The two adults scrambled down into the stove burners!!!! The babies were on my dishwasher.

So...should I call an exterminator?   Do I do something myself, and if so what??????????   I can't move back, HA!

Trying not to there are worse problems for sure....like a crack in the septic pipes that doesn't show up until after you buy the house...oh wait, that happened too    Another topic....

Help!!!!!????!!!!!   Please

Borax might work. We had roaches in our apartment in college and my roommate put borax all around the walls of the kitchen. It worked in a couple of days. We had to keep doing it though because, being in an apartment, they were coming from the other apartments. ew!

You'd have to watch the kids though. Maybe sprinkling it in cabinets like under the kitchen sink would work too, then you could keep the doors shut so the littles don't become interested in that white powder.

They are ick, but they will go away.

Where did you move to, Kacky? Are you in the city on public sewer?

When we lived in a row home in the city, we had them, and I freaked and got on a contract with an exterminator. I saw one crawl out of my drain in the kitchen and realized they could show up at any time. They also move quickly into vacant homes, so it makes sense finding them in a new home. I also kept traps under the cabinets, behind the toe kick, in my kitchen. I think the traps work like borax but aren't. As messy and keep it contained.

Honestly, I would call an exterminatior. I find they are really good at finding the pests and assessing the situation.

Not a new home...a little old lady lived here. She was a widow and had cats. We had all carpet replaced because I am allergic (one of the kiddos is too). She wasn't out 24 hours before we moved in.   We have 7acres so we have a well.

I vote for exterminator, too. While I don't like the idea of poisons in my home (though there are exterminators who use organic methods, now that I think of it), I really don't like the idea of disease-carrying insects everywhere.

Pretty much every house or apartment we've lived in in the South has had a roach problem to one extent or another. Bleah. Our current house has been okay, which is surprising, because it's 92 years old -- our last house, which was built in 1960, was a total roach nest. We had bought it from this bachelor-slacker dude, and while the roaches were not actually the grossest thing about it, they were right up there. And getting rid of them was an ongoing process.

The traps exterminators set out do do a good job. They have all kinds of baits and things that they can put in strategic places, and I've never had a problem with a small child or a pet getting into them, whereas with Borax that is a concern.

Good luck!

Sally

PS: I should add that of course you can cancel a contract with an exterminator at any time, once your problem subsides. But while you need them, it is really nice to have someone turn up once a month to hit problem spots both inside and outside your home. I would not have thought of things that our exterminator identified as problems around our current home, chiefly vegetation growing too close to or on the house (a tree touching the roof, vinca growing up really profusely around the walls on one side, etc). And again, while I'd prefer a totally organic environment around my home, I honestly do not regret having had that guy spray around the exterior foundations of the house.

Right! I remember that now. I think I still vote exterminator. The chaos of moving is bad enough without that stressor. Now that we moved out of the city, they still come quarterly and inspect for termites and such. They don't come inside the house unless there is a problem, but as Sally described, I appreciate their expertise. It is just one of those expenses we save for now. After 3 years here, we finally figured out that having a separate account where we deposit monthly helps keep the upfront cost of septic and well maintenance, fuel oil, and renewing the exterminator's contract from hurting so bad.

Moving in right on top of the last occupant is so stressful. We lived in our last house for two years, and I never quite felt that I'd gotten it clean -- we had to be out of our rental house almost before the seller was gone. We basically had to dump all our stuff in on top of that guy's dirt, and it was gross . . . I really loved that house in the end, after lots and lots of work, but this was not an auspicious beginning.

Anyway, yep, I'd get professionals to come deal with the bugs, so at least that layer of "yuck" is dealt with, while you settle and sort and get yourself right-way-up again.

I actually thought the lady would have left it worse than she had considering how cluttered and "filled" the house was and how much the cat was the center of her life. I'm pretty sure she had a lot of help.

I have an exterminator coming this afternoon for an inspection, don't know if he will do anything today or not. I woke up again middle of the night and took my camera to the kitchen and found about five babies scurrying around and then one medium size one on another counter. I took pictures before I killed the babies...wasn't able to catch the bigger one without I assumed waking the house banging after it, haha.

It kind of wigs me out that I have seen them come in and out of the dishwasher...sometimes daytime too and then in and out of the stove top burners. I'm praying I don't have to get new appliances...although a new dishwasher that uses less water would be nice

Thanks for the advice!! I'm realizing this is such a small first world problem that I need just get over my anxiety!!!

I completely wigged out, Kacky. My dh thought I'd gone crackers. And it feels so out of your control! The appliance thing would skeeve me, too. I think there is another thread with some horrifying coffee maker stories

It may be a little first world problem, but it is a normal reaction, imo.

Responding quickly to say when we had roaches I first saw them in and around the dishwasher. The exterminator said they were after the water. They were able to take care of the roaches very quickly and easily. You may be surprised to find you aren't as infested as you think. I was. The exterminator told us the roaches come in on cardboard boxes delivered from UPS and the such and probably a couple had come in and had a few babies, since he didn't find them hiding in any of the usual spots. He put out bait and they were taken care of very quickly. That was 3 years ago, and we haven't seen any more. I am very, very careful to immediately take out any boxes we get. My husband works out of the home and gets a fair amount of cardboard boxed deliveries. I remember being so embarrassed that I made my older kids call the roaches "big ants" for fear the little ones would tell the neighbors we had roaches!!
