My home does not have a dishwasher except those appendages attached to my wrists.  I am SERIOUS need of new dish towels. What are the most absorbent dishtowels? I am thinking cotton? I see the microfiber but don't know much about them. Thoughts please?

I greatly prefer cotton to microfiber for dishes. I prefer a flat towel or tea towel over terry for drying dishes, even though they are less absorbant, and I have to go through a couple if doing a sink full. I also use really hot water for rinsing and a rack so that they dry quickly and usually only need a quick wipe, even if I want to put them away immediately. My favorite dish towel for the price is from Ikea. It is white and has two red stripes down the middle. Williams Sonoma has a similar dish towel that is probably more absorbant but quite spendy. I can keep a whole bunch of the Ikea ones and replace them easily when they start to look worn, and they look cute an vintage to me.

Oh, and flour sack towels are very nice, but I find they are comparable to the Ikea ones which, again, are much less expensive.

Wow ok, I never even heard of Ikea towels until today! LOL
Now I will have to go look for them. I see there are some on amazon...

I mostly use flour sack towels, but I also have a bunch of diaper flats that were given to me. I did not like them as diapers (they were cheap Gerber ones, or something like that) but they work great as dish towels. Very absorbent!  I'll have to check IKEA if we ever get around to going there again.

Okay... Seriously... My house is sanitary...
But I had an entire plastic storage bin in the attic of cloth prefolded diapers that I haven't used in years.
They are absolutely PERFECT dish towels! And now I have a free supply for several years just sitting in my attic.

I like the plain cotton, flour sack towels as well. I find them to be available pretty inexpensively. $4 for 4 at Target. How does that compare to the IKEA towels? I'll have to check them out as they are getting such rave reviews here...
I also have some bamboo ones that my mom bought for me. They are really nice as well - very absorbant.

The ones at Target that Mary linked above is what we use here. I LOVE them!
We got a few of the flour sack dishcloths at the Dollar store one time too.
Love those as I find the terry cloth ones don't dry really well.

I used all our cloth diapers to the end.... There really was nothing left to them. Oh well......
I am absolutely going to check out he Ikea towels now.

A dollar is pretty good. The Tekla dish towel is only $.79, so probably not cheap enough to make a special trip to Ikea, but enough that I always grab a stack when we do go.

I don't use a drainer.. way to confining for the amount of dishes we have to get through.. so I really like the terry or heavier tea towels for laying on the counter.. though a bath towel folded in half works just fine too.
But for drying the dishes.. another vote for flour sack type of towels.

here are IKEA's dish towels. We have the Sickan. I didn't notice the Tekla or I would have gotten those :)
I think I'll get the Evalill too, for special occasions and just because they're so pretty :)

My favorites have lasted for 13 years with few problems and they are from Williams Sonoma. Expensive, but they were wedding and shower gifts.
They look like these logo ones, but are waffle weave.
Most absorbent, no lint. I like the flour sack and use vintage linen towels, also, but they get soaking wet fast.

We have been married for 23 years this summer.. Hence mine have been really turning into rags along the way....
This is the first time I have really thought about what I am purchasing as far as this kind of thing goes. So I want to know! LOL
Boy these flour sack ones seem to really win the tried and true test!

This is very timely as I've been lamenting how threadbare my kitchen towels have become. I do like the flour sack towels for drying, but usually let the majority of our dishes air dry.
For hand drying though, which is what I need the most, I prefer the nice thirsty 100% cotton terry. I've looked in Target and Walmart, etc. and they have few nice ones. They seem to carry more of the micro fiber which doesn't actually dry anything.
This week we stopped in Bed Bath & Beyond to look for wedding gifts. We found an abundant selection of the cotton terry towels. I really like the simple floral ones and got a couple of lovely towels.
Also, our Kroger grocery store has a seasonal aisle. We found some fourth of July towels and some citrus slice patterns that will be festive for the summer. They were 100% cotton terry, decent quality and cost $2.09.

Scored a $.29 one today in the "as is" section.  It was a little dirty is all that I could see. It cleaned up fine. Now I'll try it and see how I like it.
