I thought we had no room nor need for a deep freezer, but dh bought one anyway. :)

It stands ready to use but empty.

I was thinking today that we could purchase half of a cow versus a quarter (which actually fit in our regular freezer) and I could stock up on other meats. Maybe buy part of a hog? I also thought about making more bone broth and freezing in glass jars since I'll have more room in the regular one and making big batches of healthy muffins.

That's as far as I got. How do you use yours?

I freeze strawberries in season for use frozen or to make into jam later.

I am always haunting the discounted areas of the store and will buy anything that we use and can stand being frozen when it's clearanced. Or watch for great sales.

I bought 20 lbs of hamburger the other week clearanced for about $1.60/lb rather than $3/lb.. just means it's within a day or so of the sell/use by date.

I buy other cuts of meat.. like steaks.. we only use them for special occations but I buy them when they're on a great sale and put them in the freezer.. so much better than buying them full price when the event comes around.

I've frozen broth before (I also can it). I freeze mashed pumpkin in the fall and shredded zucchini in the summer neither of which you can can but freeze just fine.. I make pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread and zucchini bread with them.

Oh.. hams on sale at Easter and Turkeys at Thanksgiving. Can't beat the prices and they make nice meals and good leftovers.. I'll even put my electric roaster out on the patio in the summer so I can cook something like a turkey without heating up the house.

Oh you can also freeze milk. So again you can freeze it when it's on sale and use it later.

And don't have the freezer running empty. If it's going to be running it's much more efficient if it's full. Put in jugs of water to freeze. You can use it for ice in coolers.. or to carry water in the summer, it'll stay cold as the ice melts for you to drink.. but the frozen water is a much easier medium to keep cold than just air.

We use our deep freezer for tons of stuff. I have to go through on occasion and organize it all. When I get home from the store all the frozen items, or items I want to freeze, like meat, go into the deep freeze. Then, each week I bring out those items we will need and transfer them to our kitchen fridge/freezer.

I'm not sure what I would do without our deep freezer. I guess we freeze a lot!

A lot of beans. I cook them once or twice a month. Flour-since we use it less frequently now. Summer blueberries and strawberries. Buy bananas at BJs and freeze for smoothies. Also, shredded zucchini for many uses, burritos, bread, put in sauce. My freezer also has red sauce and some quick meals.lots of stuff and I could not live without freezer

My SIL freezes all the fresh fruit she picks when it's in season. She also makes multiple fruit pies and freezes them.

I can't find the blog post, but freezing blanched and peeled whole tomatoes, so they are ready for cooking. She had the portions to cut some of the liquid. Wish I could find it. All of sudden I can't search in my Feedly. Grrrr.

oh yes speaking of freezing fruit.. if you dip apple slices in a lightly sweetened lemon and water mix you can just put them in a container and freeze. I like this better than apple pie filling because I can use the apples for other things that the pie filling is too sweet for.

I buy a quantity of whatever meat is on sale. I usually do something more before freezing: repackage to meal-size using food saver; prepare marinade with meat; make meatballs, tacos, hamburger patties, etc. and food saver them. I have bins for poultry, beef, pork, bread, veggies, prepped dinners, and fruits. The door holds jars of leftover soup, stew; gluten-free flours.

I miss my deep freezer! At any given time, you could find: whole wheat pastry flour, bulk oats, various cuts of "near date" meats, zucchini - pre-shredded and in 2 cup portions, muffins, waffles, pancakes, frozen 1/2 gallon jugs of water (jugs from Grandma who only buys that size), near date yogurt....


Sadly, now we have just a top of the fridge freezer that is mostly filled with venison and chicken, the only 2 meats one of my girls can eat. Whoever buys my house, gets my fabulous upright deep freeze.

I freeze chicken, turkey, shredded cheese, nuts, flour, fruit, veggies and gf bagels.   I recently purchased these awesome containers from The Container Store. I have two stacked. They have made it so easy to keep things organized. I got the idea here: Alejandra.

I was avoiding this thread because I didn't want to admit what was in my freezer. My dh does taxidermy work as a side job . . . .. . I lost the freezer when he started this business. We are blessed with a very large frig that I bought from my parents (very cheap) when they went to stainless steel in the kitchen. It holds a lot! When I did have use of the freezer we bought half a beef and dh hunts, so lots of meat. We are debating if we need to purchase another. Yes, we do, but where is it going to go?

Thank you!!! You have all given me such great ideas!! I am actually excited about this.

It sat empty for awhile until a friend brought over many loaves of gluten-free bread that she was given by the store because it was near expiration date. She asked if I had room in my freezer and I said, well actually, I do. :)

We should receive 1/4 of a cow this week and I hope to do some large batches of muffins and almond power bars and more.

I will transfer our flours and nuts as well.

Hello, All! Sorry to come late to the conversation and I haven't been around in ages but . . .

I freeze any produce that will tolerate it . . . all kinds of fruits and veggies. We love fresh fruit, of course, but in winter, keep right on eating from the freezer. We love asparagus, broccoli, and spinach and put in as much of that as we can.

We are a family of three but I find that when I put on a batch of soup (once/wk) I can't really just buy enough celery and carrots for just one pot and even though we really think we'll eat them fresh for snacks, we never, ever do. So to minimize waste and since I'm making one pot it isn't any more work to make two . . . so I do. One pot is for supper and one goes into pint jars and into the freezer. My daughter and I share a pint for lunch or my husband east a whole one by himself at work. At the beginning of the wk he'll grab a couple to take to work.

I also freeze pesto when the basil is in season.

also . . . bread.
