We're still talking about our kitchen remodel. I finally found a friend that does contracting work who will help me with the details and, well, the contracting.
Now we are thinking about what we will need, other than a large pantry cabinet, that will make our kitchen really practical for a large family. I guess 6 kids isn't really large compared to some families, but we seem to have really big eaters and kids that love to cook and make messes in the kitchen! So I guess it seems like we have 12 kids instead of 6!
So, if you have a large family, like to make your food from scratch, do canning, and eat as naturally as possible, what are the parts of your kitchen that you couldn't live without, or wish you had?
So far, the things we plan to do are convert a peninsula to an island, add a larger pantry cabinet (even though we store most of our food in a large pantry in the basement), and convert our electric stove to gas. We can't afford to change all the appliances to "king size" or I would do that.

Well, I would make the appliances as big as I could afford!
We haven't started on our remodel yet, because we couldn't get anyone to call us back. We've had to put things off until after the baby is born. So I'm still thinking about things, too.
My biggest requirement is durable materials that won't take a lot of maintenance and won't show a lot of dirt.
More food storage, but also places to put jars, canning equipment, etc. I'm short, but I think we're going to take our soffits out and have the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling for added storage.
An undermount sink or a sink with a drainboard, to keep the water off the countertop.

I wish I had the space to have a tidy plan for all my small appliances to be easily accessible but "away." I have that for some things, like my electric griddle, which is one of the most frequently used items and yet was a total white elephant to store for years.
I wish I had space to have a spice "drawer" rather than a cabinet.

I would like to have deeper counter space where I could have the frequently used machines and still have workable counter space in front of them. Maybe they could be hidden by a "roll top desk" type of door?.

One thing I miss (from a former house) is having a dedicated space for a "baking center" as I called it. It was an area where I kept all of my flours, sugars, cookie cutters, etc. It had a large, deep counter for rolling out dough, and my big Kitchenaid stand mixer was always set up ready to use. So convenient. I did a lot more baking then and I think it might be because of the ease of it. Now I have to drag that big mixer out from under a lower cabinet and it is such a pain that it sometimes discourages me from baking.

I love having a side of the kitchen for dirty dishes and the sink, coffee pots etc., and a side of the kitchen with a big butcher block for prep and the mixer! So the dirty dishes don't stray to my prep area which is awesome...
