Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone. I'm "hoping" for a really big mixing bowl for Christmas to make bread in, but wanted to know if 13 qt would do the job or should I ask for the really big 20 qt? Can a mixing bowl ever be too big? Thanks!

wow those would be huge.. I just went and checked and it looks like my most used mixing bowls are 6qt or so (the stainless steel doesn't say and might be a bit bigger than the plastic ones.. maybe 8qt?) and they handle a 2 loaf batch of bread very well as well as a double batch of cookies.. basically about as much as I can manage with a hand mixer and/or by hand.

The big thing to be aware of is that the sides are steep enough or mixing things in a really big bowl can get really sloppy if the sides slope out too much making it easy for whatever you're mixing to slide up the sides.

I like to use a bowl that is generous in proportion to what I need. I have a very large stainless mixing bowl I bought at a restaurant supply place that I really like having, but I don't remember just what size it is. It was not very expensive. You might enjoy going to a restaurant supply store to see and feel the bowls they have in person (at reasonable prices). My bowl is generous, but very lightweight, which might not feel as nice to you to use in spite of this size (my boys kept breaking my big mixing bowls, so I decided to try stainless). I highly recommend a restaurant supply because the supplies are made to cook in large qu anti ties and are meant to last but are priced less than regular stores since they have little overhead invested in "atmosphere" (it is like a warehouse).

Thanks for the replies :) I think dh is headed to GFS today (our local restaurant supply) where they have 12 and 16 qt bowls. I want something I can make a double batch (or triple?) of bread so I can bake six loaves at once. Or maybe atriple batch of cookies :)
