Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I finally have a child who LOVES Little House on the Prairie! My 5yo dd is showing a recent interest in the stories. I would like some ideas for a Christmas gift. She reminds me of Laura. She is sweet, hard working, likes girly things, but loves to get dirty and play with her brother. Any ideas?

A slate with a slate pencil or her own tin drinking cup.

A rag doll like Charlotte, a stick of old-fashioned striped candy, a penny in the toe of her stocking.

Yes! A bonnet! I've always felt odd that I don't have any colonial dresses (great for All Saint's Day). Does anyone have a favorite site to purchase colonial dresses/bonnets? Many of you may have made your own, but I am not there.

I did see a slate and slate pencil. A tin cup is a great idea, too!

Sally, do you know where I can find a rag doll like Charlotte?

You can find bonnets at Civil War battleground museums shops and the NC History Museum gift shop (downtown Raleigh). Sometime they have rag dolls and other cloth handicrafts, too.

HTH!

Okay, I was not much of a girly girl, but I would have been over the moon for something like this

Other than the bonnets, seems like you have to special order at that site but if you google "Prairie dresses and Bonnets" you may find some ready made.

Some of my daughters like The Little House Cookbook. It's a little old for your daughter this year, but you might want to remember it in the future.

I have seen bonnets at Moore's Creek Battlefield and other national park gift shops in NC.

if you could put together a little patchwork sewing kit or even one of those no sew blanket kits, that might be fun, too. Jessica at Shower of Roses recently showed her little boy making his own blanket with the knot tying method. Very easy and cute.

Oh- even a paper patchwork kit is fun- make a grid of squares on paper and cut out fun squares of colored paper to be the quilt. She can design her own quilt and then glue it in place.

Another thing we got my daughter when when she was about the same age was a washtub and washboard (and wooden clothes pins).

She had so much fun (and you can get some laundry help out of it )

I'm not a seamstress at all, but I did make both my girls rag dolls out of old cotton tights, old bed sheets . . . they weren't necessarily like Charlotte, but they were handmade rag dolls, and not too horribly hard to make (I just made up the patterns, embroidered the faces freehand, and found clothes to fit them . . . ).

But surely there is a better way.

I am not positive what we got where as it has been awhile, but I think it was Ace Hardware and a farm supply store. Hardware or farm supply stores are going to be the general kind of places to find them.
