Our 1988 Whirlpool has bit the dust. It was a wall oven with a microwave on top and electric oven on the bottom. The microwave went out years ago. I want to replace with a double oven.

I only have 23" depth, though. Wondering if there are brands you would recommend or warn to stay away?

Are there ovens that have less digital display, with more knobs and things?

I'm all eyes and ears. This was not in my plan! God's will be done!

I have black granite in my kitchen and white cabinets with a stainless steel sink. My current oven is a white wall unit. My stove is a black surface stove on the other side of the kitchen.

My oven is about dead. What color should I go with to replace it? Stainless for a more modern look? It would match the sink. The fridge is white, and so is the dishwasher, but it's a lot of white, and then the stove is black to blend in with the counters.

I hate oven shopping. I could buy a stove/oven unit for less than half of what replacing the wall oven will cost. That seems weird. As my oven slowly dies, it is taking me longer and longer to bake things. Instead of an hour, it takes 1.5 hours, etc.

With Thanksgiving coming, I don't think I can cook a turkey reliably in the oven...

an electric roaster is only around $50-75 (maybe less) and is quite useful in it's own right other than roasting a turkey.

I have no clue about wall ovens.. they seem so tiny compared to my stove/oven unit.

And If you don't want white for your wall overs Melinda.. then the stainless would be a good choice. I don't think I'd do black because too much would be more overwhelming than white I would think.

Well, before the election we were going to totally gut our kitchen and replace everything, so I was researching wall ovens. Now - um - not so sure we're going to spend the money.

Anyway...

I was thinking that the 30 inch GE Profile convection wall ovens in black would be my first choice, because black is cheaper than stainless. After doing a lot of research on Chowhound and the Home Depot and Lowe's websites, etc, for reviews, it seems like the GE ovens had the most favorable reviews. I think the GE Cafe ovens might have knobs, but they're more expensive than the Profile.

The GE ovens aren't the cheapest, but I also looked at Whirlpool and there was more than one review which complained that if the vents at the back clogged even a little it fried some particular component which would then automatically turn the oven off while it was cooking. Apparently the part was expensive to fix and it kept happening. Since I use my oven almost daily, I want to avoid situations like that!

For reference, I also have an 80's combination wall oven/microwave. The microwave still works, but the oven is small and atrocious. Initially I wanted to just get rid of the whole wall oven thing entirely and put in a regular slide in kitchen range -- which is cheaper -- but I couldn't find one I liked that had good reviews and also had the big burners in the back (for safety.) We have to replace our cooktop, too, as it's an ancient Jenn-Air which is slowly dying, burner by burner. I really don't want to replace with electric, but we decided that running gas would be too much of a hassle.

Angela, it sounds like we must have similar set-ups in our houses. We had a Jenn-Air electric cooktop with a down draft. HATED it. We shut off the down-draft. Our house already has gas for the furnace and water heater, so it didn't take much to switch out for gas. I have a 5 burner Bosch gas top, nothing fancy, all knobs.

We replaced an old micro/oven combo w/ a Maytag combo a few years ago. It's full-sized, though, so I'm not sure if it's what you are looking for. There aren't a whole lot of options, really. I also didn't see anything that didn't have an electronic control panel.

With what you have, I think adding a black appliance with black countertops might be too much. But Black would be my second choice. Don't try matching the white appliances. Most dishwashers have panels that can turn around, or you could change out the front if you ever are in need of selling your house. I'd go with Stainless if it's not too expensive.

I think it would be wise to change before Thanksgiving esp. if you are hosting. It has been my experience that all sink and appliances act up when you hosting, particularly on Thanksgiving.

Jenn, it may not work for you unless you have a trusted repairman who could help install, but have you considered looking on Craigslist or the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for older model ovens that people just get rid of because they are remodeling and want all their appliances to match?

I'm guessing that even if you had to hire a repairman to update some of the parts (switches, appliance bulbs, etc...), you would save money over the brand new models, and you would get your desire for "knobs" rather than a modern, computerized appliance.

Sorry for the overlapping conversations in the Countertops thread. Very messy!

Since I have nothing else to do but look for ovens, a few things I've found.

1) Dh doesn't want used, so scratch that out.

2) I've found mechanical/analog ovens but apparently this is more of a professional line and the cost is prohibitive. I must have expensive taste.

So the brands I've found:

Viking
Fisher Paykel
GE Monogram
Bosch 300 and 500 and 800 series
Thermador

The least expensive of the list above is Bosch in the 300 series, but that's already over $2500.

Now IKEA has a double wall oven that is closer to at least reasonable, but still over $1000.

Problem is my depth is too short. So, is it cheaper to replace the cabinet and buy the cheaper oven, or a more expensive oven.

I know what I'll probably end up doing is buying the cheapest electronic with touch controls. But I am thinking in the long run how less expensive it is to buy one without all the electronics. Warranties only last a little while.

Well, I might be able to find a Bosch under $2000.

Basic question, how do you measure a wall oven? When they say 30-inch, where do you measure? My current oven is just short of 30 inch from edge to edge.

Measurement: I think it's the cabinet width. So if your oven is just under 30 inches, it's a 30 inch oven because the actual oven will be just a little smaller than the cabinet.

Looked at that. Seems they cost an arm and a leg, too. And what's the deal with Northstar appliances? $6K?

Cabinet width or cutout. There's a lip around the oven, and it looks like the cutout is smaller. I'm confused looking at this.

We decided to pay up a little for the brand that had better reviews re: repairs and performance. That's why we were going to go with the GE Profile, which is $2000-$2200, depending on options. I figured that we possibly spend more money in repairs or to replace the ovens if they didn't last as long as others, or we could spend more up front. But that's if we have the budget around where we thought we had it.

Actually, what we've done is to figure out our first choice, or second choice, etc. Then once we can figure out what everything costs together, we can figure out which choice we need to go with.

And of course I guess it's always possible that you'll get a lemon no matter how much you pay. (For instance, I hear that Viking has a really bad repair record.) We usually just try to shoot for the middle... but that's always assuming that the money is there in the first place.
