So I'm trying to pull up some foods for Advent feast days. One cookie I love that fits well for Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe is Mexican Wedding Cakes also known as Russian Tea Cakes. I think they are also called snowball cookies?

I was going to suggest shaping like crescent moons for OLG.

But I've been informed no foods with peanuts or tree nuts ingredients. While rules this out (and a few others).

So does anyone have other white looking cookies, covered with powdered sugar? I think there is a Lemon cookie recipe, but I don't have one. Oranges and lemons are also symbols of Mary, so this combo would be good.

Meringue Kisses would be another option. Just trying to get some alternatives that aren't complicated but reflect white and pure like Mary.

Sigh. This is really cramping my style. Glad I didn't bake beforehand! I was going to do some allergy subbing with almond flour and almond yogurt. Can't do that now.

A few nut-free versions:

Mexican Wedding Cookies with oats instead

Mexican Wedding Cookies with sunflower seeds for nuts

I've made these a couple of times. We liked them a lot, but I LOVE lemon, and we are used to "alternative" sweets and things, so I've stopped thinking that what we like has much bearing on what others will

It really was yummy, though, and super easy, and they would definitely be the type to roll in some confectioner's sugar.

The only thing is that they are kind of delicate. So, I would put them in a sturdy container and not bang them around. Not the type you can put in a gallon bag or you'll end up with one big cookie.

Those look yummy and easy, LIndsay. But I can't do the almond flour or coconut by their rules. But I will try them here!

I was wondering if you could do a lovely sugar cookie, Jenn...and just roll it in powdered sugar. I know you can't use nuts...but could you use an almond extract?? Probably not.

Or...I just love orange extract, and that works so well as a symbol of our Lady. Incorporate the orange extract in the cookie and then sprinkle with powdered sugar.

This Lemon Snowball Cookie doesn't have nuts in it.

Oh, sorry, did they have almond flour? I thought it was just coconut, and I didn't realize coconut qualified as a tree nut. I guess I think of it more as a fruit, but I just found this

Quote:
Should coconut be avoided by someone with a tree nut allergy?
Discuss this with your doctor. Coconut, the seed of a drupaceous fruit, has typically not been restricted in the diets of people with tree nut allergy. However, in October of 2006, the FDA began identifying coconut as a tree nut. The available medical literature contains documentation of a small number of allergic reactions to coconut; most occurred in people who were not allergic to other tree nuts. Ask your doctor if you need to avoid coconut.

so it is apparently debatable in terms of allergies.

I know, technically it's a fruit or a seed, but not a nut, but since this is the way they usually approach, I'll respect their wishes.

Have you considered doing homemade marshmallows with cookie cutters? Martha Stewart has a recipe, and you could easily do moon and star shapes.

As a nut allergy mom, I want to warn about almond extract. Almost all is made without nuts, but the smell will freak out the mom, at least it would me

Hereis a nut free crescent cookie recipe. I have not made them.

Jenn, can you or the children eat cornstarch? These Melting Moments cookies are an old recipe that uses cornstarch instead of flour. Maybe that would work?

ETA: The cornstarch only replaces part of the regular white flour, so they're not gluten free if that's an issue.

Another candy alternative ~ divinity. My aunt used to make this every year ~ a simple, yet fitting, treat to celebrate Mary's role as vessel of Christ's Divinity!

Jenn, of course you may share the thought. Please pray for my Aunt Charlotte's soul ~ she was/is a faithful soul who inspired so many others on the pathway to Heaven!

I just saw this pin of Divinity. I used to make it often, though I haven't make it in a long time, but this version has Pecans, which looks like a nice addition to try!

I'm wondering if it has to be corn syrup. I'm thinking Lyle's Golden might work. I converted my pecan pie easily.

any syrup type thing should work.. what you're doing when adding corn syrup to a cooked sugar candy is mixing your sugars so that they don't crystalize as easily.. making your candy grainy instead of smooth.
