Give me your best washers! We will probably go with a front-loader as we pay per litre for water here...

I like my front loader - just don't get an LG. We had to have a simple repair And the repair man said he would never repair one again because the parts are impossible to get to (I think It was the belt).

Is that a newer machine, Lindsay? I was just about to say that our local repairman said to not get Maytag or Amana now that they are done all in china. He's seen too many motherboards fried and other unfixable problems.

I was also thinking of the Bravos- is it a HE top-loader?

Do NOT get an LG...mine is AWFUL and I paid a lot for it. The dryer broke for the same thing 3 times and the 3rd time they refused to repair it even though in our book it is definitely a lemon.
The washer doesn't wash well at all. I have to replace it and the only thing I have is a top loader for now. I really liked the savings on soap and water and such, but it would be nice if the clothes actually got clean. I had to stop using cloth diapers for the short term because no matter how long I had them in there, they never got clean enough. There is a website about LG where patrons list all of the things that went wrong with their appliances...there are literally thousands of unresolved complaints.
I would look for another brand IMHO
I hope you find what you need!

Whirlpool WAIS the brand I have. My repairman had recommended that brand. I have a HE top loader. I've raved about it before.

Bought a Siemens frontloader ~5 years ago -- still runs great (had to have it fixed one time because I was experimenting with DIY laundry detergent and it clogged up the system -- totally my fault). I would have bought a Speed Queen but I needed it fast and the Speed Queen people told me they couldn't get one in until a week later. I defaulted on the Siemens because it's basically a rebadged Bosch -- for $100 less, and I trust Bosch (German engineering and all that).
If I had to buy a washer today though I'd wait a week or more for a Speed Queen. It's made in the USA, no computer boards to get messed up, all steel construction (last I checked). A thread that might help:

We have a Whirlpool Duet HE Front Loader. I've loved it. We've had our front loading Whirlpool washer and dryer for nearly 7 years now, and they are going strong - we haven't had any repairs done, or any issues with them.
** I love the large capacity! I can fit a king size quilt in our machine.
** I am always pleased with how well they clean our clothes, and particularly like the small amount of water that is necessary. Our water here is hard, and we live in Alabama, which has a high iron content in the soil....which equals red dirt. It's a pain to clean clothes here, but this washer has been nothing short of impressive in that department.
** I also really, really, REALLY love the sanitary cycle on my machine. I use it after a virus has swept through, tossing in sheets, towels, clothes.
Good luck making a decision quickly, Kristie!

Oh, and I've been through 2 children in cloth diapers since we had this washer and have REALLY loved how well the machine worked with cloth diapers. It does a great vinegar cold water rinse, but the hot water white cycle does such a good job on my cloth diapers, and what's more, the diapers (I used Fuzzi Bunz) did so well in the washer.
I wash EVERYTHING in that machine, and no matter what I seem to throw at it, it works well. Dog pillows/beds - check. Horse blankets - check. Delicates - check. Wool (yes, I can wash wool in this machine ) - check. Shoes (often!!) - check. Silk - check.

That is what I wanted to get Jen, but since our basement renos we have very little clearance!! We may be forced to go with the top loader as I haven't found anything but a Bosch front loader to fit down the stairs. (But the Bosch is a little out of our price range!)

If you take the door off the hinges, will you have a little more wiggle room to make it happen?
..that is what we did...

Sitting here with my cup of tea - and I had to chime in - after a year of research and agonizing over which washer and dryer:
SPEED QUEEN
I am totally in love. Better than any front loader, HE top loader or old fashioned. I was sad to lose my very old dependable whirlpool washer and dryer which were dying. (after many years of several loads a day)- but my Speed Queens are just the best.
Really sturdy, great warranties, no fancy computerized stuff, and I get to choose water levels and temperature I can stop the machine and add clothes. Made in the USA. Steel construction.
Probably not supercapacity like some of the newer front loaders - but I can live with that for reliability and ease of use.
I just feel so thankful to the salesman who told me about them - as I had never heard about Speed Queen.

...well...how far are you from Detroit? Meet you at the bridge? T
hey are sold here, in Lincoln Park. And I have one. And I love it. I feel so guilty telling you this , but for the benefit of others who can get one, they are super durable (they manufacture the ones used in laundromats, and are made in USA.) edited to add: I see that Marilyn has already espoused the virtues of Speed queen! That's what I get for scrolling too fast!)
Good luck in your laundry quest!

It is worth calling Speedqueen - and also your local dealer. My dealer sold but did not service - and I could not find a local servicer - but I asked my dealer and Speed Queen and my dealer ended up becoming an authorized servicer
Re water usage - they use less water than older machines because of the 2009 US govt regulations re water. Although water bills are a concern for me I was more concerned that the clothes were well rinsed - and everyone I know with the front loaders never feels that their clothes are rinsed enough and end up rinsing extra (thus not really saving water) I also looked at the HE top loaders (agitator free) and thought they creased clothes way too much and many got really bad reviews.
