Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I picked up this small OOP paperback book published in 1979:

Baking Bread the Way Mom Taught Me by Mary Anne Gross

I'm not really baking bread except for a few times in the year, but I love to peruse baking books. I'm always looking for feast days breads.

This little book is so different from any of the bread books I've read. I found the introductory part delightful. She starts with a chapter "Baking Bread the Way Mom Taught Me". Writing in a living style, she goes through all the steps for a beginner. It's conversational style, between Mary and Mom, with Mary learning to bake her first loaf of bread. Mom shows her how, with explanation for ingredients and reasons for rising and kneading and such.

By looking at the ingredients of the various breads, the author seems to follow an old Adelle Davis of nutrition, adding wheat germ and Brewer's Yeast for more protein and healthiness in the bread.

There are many different types of recipes in this book, from soft crust breads, crusty breads, Meat and Cheese Breads, Sweet Breads, Sourdough Breads and Special Breads.

All delightful, but this is written not in a style of being an artisan baker, but providing healthy and tasty home baked breads in the home.

I just thought I'd give it a mention, just because it was so different from all the bread books I've read, and even if you aren't baking bread or staying away from gluten/wheat, I just found the living style of the instructions so delightful. The explanations of WHY different ingredients and why certain steps would just make you or your child understand the process of baking bread.

That sound like a neat book! It would definitely be used for science experiments in our home!

We just found an easy recipe for pizza dough and the kids had a blast watching the yeast "eat" before being kneaded into the flour. Since then they have been watching my mother-in-law intently while she bakes and they tell her what the ingredients are doing in each step of the recipe.

So much fun to cook and bake, but to teach at the same time!

Thanks for sharing!

That sounds like a really lovely book!

I know my kids would definitely enjoy something like that.
