Grr....
I didn't realize so much of the Christmas candy in stores was made in China,
especially candy canes . I never thought to check the labels until a friend pointed it out to me.
Candy canes and fancy lollipops seem to be big ones. I just bought TinTin lollipops at the Word Market for my dc. I'm afraid to check the labels now...

How frustrating! I thought you were going to talk about a special ethnic candy from China...not Chinese made American candy.
So disappointing. Thanks for letting me know.

LOL, me too. I was all excited to maybe find a new "not so sweet, sweet" recipe.
Thanks for the heads up about the candy though!

Oops, I wasn't frustrated because I was clicking. I was feeling your frustration, and then explaining what I expected by the subject line.
Such bad writing!

LOL, I wasn't frustrated at clicking over either! I'm sorry my quoting came across that way. I agree with Jenn.

Hammond's - US made candy, old-fashioned goodness. They have gotten quite a bit of publicity over the last several years due to being featured by Martha Stewart, Food Network, etc.
It's a local company for us, great tour, what a treasure...but anyone can order online. And they are carried at lots of specialty stores around the country. You defineitly pay more than Chinese...but well that's why we are swamped with Chinese candy...

I changed the thread title... sorry about the confusion
I am concerned about the dyes especially from the MIC candy. But now I realize I should check all food labels. Didn't Walmart get in trouble a year or so ago for honey MIC that was really 99% high fructose corn syrup?
Arghhh- wish we had a Hammond nearby!

Thanks for starting this thread, Melinda! I hadn't even gotten to this point in my purchasing yet ,and I was putting it off because I was dreading searching through candy labels.
But your thread saved me TONS of time thanks to Mary and Lindsay's suggestions! THANK YOU!!!! I'm looking forward to our little Christmas candy box from Hammond's!! Wish we could've just driven up to pick it up, Mary...and stopped in for wine and dinner!

I'm trying to stay away from the red dyes particularly. When Hammonds says "natural candy canes" will that mean red beets like the link Lindsay had?

I totally understand the red dye issue, but for those only concerned about "made in china" which I avoid, it looks like the Target brand called Peppermint Candy Canes naturally flavored are made in mexico. Just checked ours from St. Nicholas Day. They do have Red 40 and corn syrup. I wonder if Hammonds could deliver by Christmas?

Yes, if you order by Dec. 20. They're automatically upgrading shipping to FedEx Express shipping.

I was just looking at my favorite candy canes (which aren't canes but either balls or sticks) and
Quote:
Farley's & Sathers Candy Company has developed its business both through internal growth and through the acquisitions of famous confectionery brands, including FARLEY'S®, SATHERS®, HEIDE®, JUJYFRUITS®, NOW AND LATER®, BOBS®, SWEET STRIPES®, SUPER BUBBLE®, FRUIT STRIPE®, RAIN-BLO®, TROLLI®, CHUCKLES®, AND BRACH'S®. |
|
|
And their locations are all USA or Mexico. I guess being in Mexico isn't great but it's not China.
(I like the bob's sweet stripes that are "soft")

Thanks, Jen. I'll have to show my husband. They are a bit pricey :)

Ironicaly, the link Lindsay had was to Hammond's canes (sold throuugh a different distributor). So the answer to your question is, "yes".

Update: I did find some Hammond's candy at my local Fresh Market store
I also found some thin peppermint sticks dipped in dark chocolate... seriously wonderful.... by a company called Bogdons. It looks to be all natural (vegetable color)., made in USA. 4 sticks are only 70 calories... and I would say that two sticks are enough to give you a good taste fix.
But I will experiment further with that and see if I reach any different conclusions...
