Hi all!
I have spent a few minutes looking to see if there has been a thread on compost bins. Has anyone had success making their own? If someone has a link on this for me or or has a recommended compost bin, please pass along this information. Thank you so much!

I made one by wiring four wooden pallets together with coathangers. I connected three of them top and bottom on each end to make a 3-sided box, and the fourth I attached only at one end, so that it's hinged like a door for easy access. It's worked well for me for the last three years, though eventually I'll have to replace the pallets.
It's at the back of my yard, against a brick wall, and I've planted some fast-growing bushes (privet I dug up from other parts of the yard) to make a screen, so it's not super-visible from the house.

This is more a contained pile, by the way, than a bin per se, but it does hold a good bit, which I appreciate this time of year, with lots of leaves in my yard!

I wanted a compost tumbler a few years ago. The cost was  . Dh made me one out of a trash can(he actually made me 2- a cooker and a storer).
He bought a trash can with handles that come up and lock the lid on. He painted the can black, to increase the heat inside, he drilled many 1 inch holes all over the outside of the bin. It works pretty well.
I have the kids tip it over, top locked, and roll it around, then stand it back up.

We bought a black plastic one when our local recycling place held a salelast Spring. I think that it was $40 (at cost) and came in 2 parts - easy to get in the car.
It set up very easily. The bin has a lid on top that can be turned to lock,vents, and a little door at the bottom that lifts up to get the compost.
I love it. It's easy to dump waste (green outdoor/fruits/vegs scraps). I use an old broom handle to poke holes all the way to the bottom and move it around a bit to let air in. Works great. Black gold when that compost is ready -- and it's amazing how much waste we keep out of our weekly garbage pickup. More than 1/2 in warmer months.

We've had lots of ugly, unsightly bins until now  Not made but bought. Metal pedestal bin, looks lovely on the outside, inside lifts easily out for the children to take out the scraps to the chooks. Finally I'm not embarrassed.

Whoops, do you mean the bin storage in the kitchen? or the compost heap in the yard? If in yard I tyres can make a good container, also buy a paper shredder and add your paper shreds.

Erin, Yes, I was speaking of the outside compost. Right now, we do use our outdoor yard garbage can - the one the city gives you to put yard trash in, but the lid does NOT lock. We rotate it and add to it. I like how large it is, but I know it does not work as well (fast) as other options. As we live on some acreage, we also have "areas" of compost, but I don't add kitchen scraps or anything like that to it. I suppose they are really just brush piles, which we usually end up burning. I so know we could be doing things so much more efficiently and I just don't have the time for research. Any ideas?
Anne, How do I turn our outside can into a cooker? Is it just making sure the can has holes and a lock?
Onthelane, I am definitely going to check out our local recycling place!!! I am looking for something large and also something easy to use.
Sally, I would love to see a picture of your pallet bin!
