I have area rugs and I keep having issues with the corners and edges curling up. I keep tripping over them! Short of nailing them to the floor, what can I do?

I have no suggestions. But this sounds horribly irritating. I'm quite sure it would drive me nuts, especially with my ocd tendencies with little things like this . I'd nail 'em.

I saw some rug tape at Bed Bath and Beyond the other day - I'm going to check that out myself to try to keep my rugs from sliding around on my new hardwood floors.

I'm late to this, but I was going to suggest rug tape, too. You can find it in any hardware store. If you move the rug and need to pull up the rug tape, you can use goo gone to remove leftover sticky. Rug tape is just double sided tape with serious stick.

This probably doesn't apply to most people: we had/have the same problem and I used Rug Tape, but because we track in an INSANE amount of dirt (I/boys literally sweep 10 times a day), and this rug is in the wake of the oncoming dirt. Anywa, the dirt wore away the stick of the Rug tape after a week. It looked great for a week though!!
Still trying to figure another solution out. I keep thinking if I somehow sewed a weighted cloth to the underside that would help? But that sounds way complicated! So it doesn't happen.

Do you use a rug pad? Maybe if you taped the rug to the pad with the tape, the grippiness of the pad would help keep the rug flat, but the dirt wouldn't be such an issue.

This is my suggestion, as well. The pad we have has a bit of grip on the bottom that holds the rug in place quite nicely. It also raised the rug up just a bit so that it lays quite nicely (this isn't noticeable when you walk on it and we have never kicked up a corner, etc because of it).
As for the dirt, I have the same issue with boys! The pad isn't perfect but it keeps quite a bit of dirt from getting under the rug. When I vaccume the rug and I flip up the edges most of the dirt is right at it's edge and very, very little gets underneath. If you vaccmed or swept more regularylyt than I do I doubt you would notice any!

Oh, and I forgot to add, Maryan, when you say things in passing like,

it makes me feel sane. Sometimes I think I must have imagined sweeping/cleaning/etc... Charles Schultz was not exaggerating much, I think, when he drew in that cloud of dirt around his character pig pen. My consolation is that at least it means my boys are spending quality time out of doors. Boys are just MESSY.

Ah, cross-posted with Betsy. Gladder still that dirt seems to be a universal boy thing
I saw this some time ago, and it seemed amazingly accurate:
Just this morning, I expelled a lot of energy trying to insist that breakfast could be a "quiet" meal, and that it was way to early to speak above a whisper

Love it!! Whispering is as scarce at our house as dirt is common!
And I have used rug gripper pads -- but that hasn't worked either. Not sure if that was the dirt or why. I suspect due to its location the solution is probably a heavier rug... which isn't in the budget right now.

Thanks for the ideas. I had thought of rug tape, but I also have boys and I know the dirt would just destroy the tape in no time. These rugs are in really high traffic areas.
Seriously considering a staple gun at this point, but I will look into getting a pad underneath and see if that helps first.
