Another coffee maker pot bit the dust in our household yesterday (right in the middle of harried dinner prep). I'm tired, tired, tired of dealing with breakable coffee pots and ugly coffee makers that inhabit more counter space than I am comfortable with, especially since I don't even drink the stuff. Anyone here have experience with stovetop or electric percolators? I'm looking for an alternative that's not too costly ~ something that could possibly survive much-beloved-but-easily-distracted teenage dishwashers. I really want something that pleases the coffee drinkers in the family, but doesn't cause stress by breaking at the slightest tap against a stainless steel sink. TIA

I think that Cuisinart makes a drip coffee maker with a stainless steel carafe.
I now use a French press, and after breaking three glass (and the second glass carafe for my drip maker), I bought the stainless steel French press from Ikea. I actually dropped it while taking it out of the packaging, lol, and it has a huge dent in the side, but I've been using it for a couple of years now with no further dents, and of course, no breaks.

Oh, and if you already have a tea kettle, the carafe itself is all the space it takes. It can easily fit in a cubburd.

Yes, that is what we have. I will never go back to glass coffee makers. The plus side also is that the carafe keeps the coffee warm, and the coffee doesn't keep "cooking" on the burner. There is no burner for this one.

I have a Delonghi with the stainless steele carafe. It's not exactly the model shown but very similar. I too won't go back to glass  .

You can get a stainless steel french press! Takes up the least amount of room and nothing to plug in...

I got tired of fragile french presses, so I started using a 4 cup glass measuring cup and a stainless steel fine mesh strainer (I got mine for a few dollars at TJMaxx, I don't know why this one is so expensive?).
I use it just like a french press and it works awesome. Plus I can safely put them in the dishwasher when they need to be clean.  Four cups works well for two cups of coffee, if you need more than that you could get a 2 quart size measuring cup or use two 4 cup measuring cups.
To heat the water I use a Breville Electric Teakettle and it works awesome!

We just have a basic stainless percolator, like our grandparents had. It makes good strong coffee and takes up less room on the counter. Less than $5 at the thrift store!

I love the taste of a french press. After we broke the last one, I found one at Marshalls that was stainless and I am loving it...easy to use, easy to clean and my 11 makes coffee for us

my suggestion was going to be a stainless steel french press as well. I like that style because I can put on the kettle and make dh's coffee and my tea or hot chocolate etc all at the same time. It just feels friendlier that way

The only catch about the French press is quantity. It doesn't make as much as a drip or percolator, so if you have company over or you have more than 2-3 coffee drinkers, you will have to make it twice, ime.

Thank you all for the responses! I was already thinking in terms of volume. I also need to consider ease of use for dh and older family members who like their morning coffee ~ ease of use, durability, large volume and affordability are the criteria I've finally whittled my way down to. I'm not getting very far in online searches. Bridget, perhaps St. Anthony will lead us to a cheap vintage percolator at one of our local thrift stores! Sure wish I could drink coffee ~ I'm getting blurry-eyed from searching!

one of those insulated carafes would make the french press easy to use and use in sequences and keep the coffee nice and hot until used up.

I bought an 8 cup stainless steel press after I broke the last glass carafe and keep the glass one (I bought a replacement carafe) in the cupboard for using when I have company and need to make extra coffee.

I made a wool cozy for my glass one and it's keeps it nice and hot! The stainless keeps the coffee hot a good while too. But for company a carafe might be better because the coffee can get bitter if left sitting too long in the press.
Also, I just recently started making cold brewed coffee by putting the coffee and water in the press before I go to bed (leaving the plunger up of course and telling my dh to please not push it down ). I heat it by the cup in the morning with an immersion heater (love those things! no microwave here) and oh my! I had no idea cold brewed was so smooth!!!

I think these are the best Bridget! I keep looking for one but haven't seen any recently at my local thrift stores.
I saw one a year ago and am still kicking myself for not getting it!

I'm still pondering and exploring all the wonderful ideas here. Meanwhile, I had forgotten that I'd purchased an inexpensive, slighty chippy stoneware "Drip-o-Lator" at a thrift shop this Summer, with the intention of using it for steeping herbs. While searching online for various coffee making devices, I ran across a variety of Drip-o-Lators.
Voila! For now, we're able to "use what we have" ~ and it does work quite handily ~ until St. Anthony helps us discover another thrifty option! I just love it when God sends something our way ~ even before we actually need it!
Now we won't be coffee-less when dd and her blessed family, and ds and his dear ones, all come "soon and very soon" for a visit! So thankful not to be robbing the grocery budget to replace yet another broken item! I'll still be awaiting the invention of the Indestructo-Coffee-Machine! Hmmm, maybe I'll assign that project to youngest ds, who absolutely loves exploring, and re-exploring, the pages of "The Way Things Work" and "The New Way Things Work"!
