Where can I find plain canned pumpkin this time of year?

I have a great recipe for pumpkin muffins that I make year round, but now I am having real trouble finding canned pumpkin (I can get canned pumpkin
pie mix, which is not the same).

I've tried Walmart, Target and several local grocery stores. The local health food store has it- but $3.39 per can, organic, and I need two cans for my recipe.

If you are thinking that this fall I should stock up on it at Thanksgiving, we are thinking the same thing . In the mean time...

It's too early for pumpkin to be processed, so unless the stores have cans left from last year, they are out till harvest.

I buy a case or 2 each fall so I have it in my pantry all year.

You may be able to substitute canned yams in your recipe. Several squashes also cook up like pumpkin but it's a little early for them too.

Check Amazon. Their prices are probably a little high right now, but sometimes I find excellent sales there. I got a case of their organic pumpkin last fall for about $1/can.

I don't believe we've recovered from the 2009 shortage. There was an adequate supply again in fall 2010, but no surplus and I stopped finding it in most stores by the first of the year. I have only found it in a couple stores this year (Sunflower Natural Market) and it is a spendier brand. Internet searching now does indicate they thought the shortage was over and the crop in 2010 would be good, but it looks like it was still low. Hopefully 2011 crop really recovers. We also cook with pumpkin year around and it has been a challenge now for awhile. Stock up this fall!!

Canned pumpkin??

Do you know that we don't have canned pumpkin in Germany?
We do have pumpkins, but not the convenience of being canned! Pure luxury!

Ah, I had forgotten about the great pumpkin shortage. Thanks for the links!
I am going to start watching the pumpkin on Amazon. Maybe I can catch a great deal and stock up.

That would be a big bummer not to have the canned option for pumpkins...
Do Germans use much in their cooking?

I wish you lived close by. I have 2 cans in my pantry since I stocked up on Trader Joe's organic at Thanksgiving. They never carry it year round, but I didn't even think about the conventional stuff at the store being seasonal, too!

Baked (in the microwave), mashed or blenderized sweet potatoes plus a little water sub for canned pumpkin perfectly.

Aldi had canned sweet potatoes they were closing out for .25 and I have used them to make my pumpkin muffins successfully--actually I think the kids might like them better!

A friend of mine with a DH in the food supply business warned about shortages again last year. I am glad I bought three cases.

Given the really bad growing season so many regions of the country are having, it cannot hurt to have a couple of cases of ANYTHING put back...much less something so seasonal as canned pumpkin.
