What do you put in your coffee if you can't have dairy and you don't want to use "non-dairy creamer"?

I'm trying to eliminate dairy to see if it is affecting the problems my (still nursing a lot) 13 month old has. I've cut out most dairy anyway, and the little cheese I do eat is easy to drop, but the cream in my coffee?? That one's tough. I don't like it black.

It's an awful dilemma. I never tried Almond or rice milk, but maybe that would work?

I tried Silk soy and it was awful. I ended up doing the non-dairy Rich's which is found in the freezer section. Terrible ingredients, I know, but it worked when I had to deny so much for my son's allergies.

When I had to do the same I switched to drinking Yerma Mate. I drink this without milk and just a little stevia.

It wasn't totally love at first sip, but it has grown on me as my #1 choice for a hot drink in the morning. In fact I still drink it in the morning even though I am now drinking milk again!

Just to clarify, Yerba Mate is it's own drink drink from Tea and Coffee. To me it tastes more like a herbal tea, but it has the thickness of coffee. I buy in loose and use my french press to make it.

Anyway, maybe it will give you an option to coffee.

I would try almond milk.. it doesn't have the sourness of most soy stuff.

I like the rice milk in mine after years of putting soy in it. I know Silk Soy does make a creamer that isn’t too bad. There is also oat milk.....haven’t tried that one in coffee.

Almond milk might taste good in coffee...you can make it yourself, too!

Betsy, do you know if this stuff causes any problems for those who are sensitive to chocolate? (I think my little guy may be also, which for him, you know! Hope he grows out of it!)

No I don't. However, until I linked to that page this morning I had never heard of a chocolate connection. It doesn't taste anything like chocolate. After going back and looking at the page that I linked to above I think that the "chocolate" reference is probably more for a marketing ploy. I mean what is the "euphoria of chocolate" anyway???? Therefore, my gut would say that it would be okay, but you will need to make the final decision. Sorry I couldn't help more.

So brand makes a coconut milk creamer that is sold in the dairy section, but I've also used coconut milk straight from the can. However, I've only been able to find that creamer at a more specialty market like Whole Foods. My Kroger doesn't carry it, only Silk soy creamer.

I missed the last post by missyc, but I was coming back to post about the So Delicious coconut milk. I've been using it in my coffee, and its pretty good. Not half and half, mind you, but makes the coffee drinkable.

The 100 days of real food blog (sorry, don't know how to link on my phone) has some dairy/sugar free creamer recipes that use coconut milk and either maple syrup, honey, or date paste (with instructions on making it). Haven't tried them yet, but it is on my list;)

I am Dairy sensitive as well, I have found that Rice milk does nothing for coffee (you might as well add water...) and I can't stand soy.

Almond milk is great in it though Coconut milk is good too, but more expensive usually so I usually stick with the almond.

We've tried this, and don't like it much, but some people seem to like it.

I can't have soy or dairy and I HATE almonds and coconut.

Does the almond milk taste nutty? Maybe a stupid question?
