Ours is dying by inches...
...and I have no idea which ones are really worth buying. One of my friends just got a new one (digital, with a bagel setting, etc.) and she really doesn't like it.
All opinions welcome!

Oh, ours is, too. We have a Black and Decker one we got for our wedding.
I have to find the issue of Cook's Illustrated which reviewed the different ovens...

Arghhh...thought I'd get an answer as to what to buy.
I had a Black and Decker that lasted through college (in the 80's) until a few years ago. Replaced it with a B&D again-it lasted one year!! I actually spent some serious $ on a KitchenAid and it's hanging on by a thread after 2 or 3 years.

We have never had one and for whatever reason I've been looking for them as we go to yard sales. But to be honest, I have no idea what I would use it for necessarily. I just figured I'd find something to use it for. It must be handy!
What do you guys use it for, especially on a regular basis?!

well toast.. also broiled toast.. like garlic toast where you butter and sprinkle on garlic and then broil the bread.. and we don't have a microwave so we also reheat single or double servings in it.. it's wonderful for reheating a serving of tater tots for instance.

We don't have a toaster, and I find a toaster oven is easier to manage all sorts of different types of "toasting", such as bagels, English muffins, waffles. And like Jodie said, things with toppings, like butter or cheese, the oven can handle.
It's easier to take out the food than out of a toaster when it's not a standard size.
We also use it to reheat small portions, especially breads and biscuits.

I was completely overwhelmed when I was looking a couple of years ago. There didn't seem to be much in between cheap and exorbitant. I had a Black and Decker under the counter one that lasted 6 years or so, but I couldn't find it when I was looking, and everything seemed so HUGE. I ended up going to Walmart and buying the cheapest one they had (I want to say it was around $20), and its seen better days, the timer doesn't always work well, but it is still working after two years of almost daily use.

I found my copy of Cook's Illustrated, March & April 2011.
Highly recommended was a whopping $249.95, The Smart Oven by Breville, Model BOV800 XL.
Recommended is Hamilton Beach Set and Forget Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking, Model 31230, $99.00.
Recommended with Reservations are several models...for me, I'd look for those that have good toasting ability. The cheapest was Oster 6081 6 Slice Toaster Oven, $58.01, and toasting is the best ranking.
We have to replace ours, too, but I've been procrastinating.

I noticed some nice ones at Costco last week, but I don't recall the brand because I wasn't really in the market.
I just hate how big they all are. So much counterspace, yk? I can definitely see the advantage of a 6 slice oven with a large family, but if I wanted to do that much toast at once, I think I'd use the oven. Right now, I have kids who will stand next to the little toaster and switch out for me while I fix everything else

Yes, I think they are awfully large now. It will be a jump in size for us, too. I think the larger size is to aim for small convections oven, cooking a chicken or something.

oh yeah.. when we do toast for the whole family.. it's done in the oven.
And a toaster oven takes less space than a microwave and toaster. But I haven't looked for one in oh.. at least a year and a half.. my sister gave me one (with a conventional toaster on one end too) when the last one died.. they rarely used the oven part.. just the toaster so got a 4 slot toaster that took less space and gave me the toaster oven.. and it's dying.. it won't shut off so we unplug it when not in use

Yes, but you can't defrost meat in a toaster oven, which is why I couldn't hold out and had to replace my microwave. I'm just too absent minded, and when I spend all day thinking I'm making tacos for dinner only to realize at 5:00 I never defrosted the meat...well, its frustrating for everyone, lol.

Oh, and I got a little bitty microwave which is about the same size as those enormous toaster ovens, lol.

cooking the meat from frozen is even faster.. toss it into a skillet with some water and a lid.. and chop it up as it thaws

I also cook roasts from frozen in the oven (not the crock pot.. I think they can't heat up fast enough that way).. it just takes about 1.5 times the normal cooking time.. but that's way easier for me than getting it out several days ahead.

Nancy, I LOVE my Cuisinart toaster oven - this one. We use it several times a day most days. I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon. I know it's expensive but I use it in lieu of my oven anytime I can, which is often since it's large enough to roast a tray of veggies or bake a bunch of potatoes or bake a casserole. The convection feature speeds things along and I'm not heating my kitchen up more than is necessary.
