Here are my criteria:
A shoe that can be worn without socks.
A shoe that can be washed.
A shoe that protects the foot (no slip on crocs) while running, biking, playing in the woods, etc.
Something that will not wear out the first week they drag their toes on the concrete (I know, I'm really pipe dreaming on this one!).
Any ideas?

I have had the exact some criteria for the last few years. We ended up with Keens.
I got mine from REI. In the spring/early summer they would have a sale that I could get a least a few pairs for around $35.
My boys are HARD on there shoes and these held up reasonably well until they out grew them. Plus, they could wear them into the fall with socks on so they can be used longer then typical sandals.
If you wanted another choice which doesn't protect the feet as well but can be washed and is durable I would also consider Chaco's. I have had a pair for about 7 years and they are still in great condition.

Depends on how much you want to pay.. but I'd look for a shoe like the Teva sandles that cover the toe.. like the Toachi or Omnium.
And I'd look other places before ordering Teva as well. I went looking for the shoe not the bargain.

We like the Keen and/or Teva with the covered toes. They do make for smelly feet, though, so need to be cleaned more often.

though I have to say that the slip on crocs are more likely to get onto the feet since they do slip on than anything else that would be more secure on the foot. And my toddlers will actually keep the crocs on instead of taking their shoes off given any chance.

Absolutely Keens.
You will pay a bit more upfront. But they withstand a rough and tumble summer... and they are one of the few shoes that make it through more than one of my boys for hand me downs as well. We have true, blue Pacific NW summers with lots of creek-walking, biking, seashell stepping-on, dragging branches through woods, etc. And we love Keens!
If you can afford it, I highly recommend them. They have a number of styles which are waterproof and can just be tossed in the washer.

Another vote for Keens. They hold up SO well, and can be washed out easily, and protect the feet well. Love them!
