I love white. I have always loved white, especially white t-shirts. They are so cool and light for the summer.

But I have to say that I am rethinking white these days. I find I am having to replace my summer white shirts about every two years (if they last that long). Even clorox doesn't seem to work on some of the tougher spots that mysteriously appear. And I don't have babies or toddlers- I'm just hard on white myself, I guess.

I am wondering how other moms feel about white. Is it worth the extra work to baby it along in your wardrobe? Have you found that certain brands last longer and are more stain resistant?

Clorox and I have a bad time together . If I don't splash it on my clothes outright then somehow it works it's way on to colored items when I'm not looking, anyway. I do better with bleach pens, but they do get pricy.

Hmm... red, anyone?

I actually now own a white slipcovered couch!!

I find that a half day soak in a washer with copious amounts of oxyclean does wonders! Same with white shirts--IF they haven't been through the dryer first. Sigh.

I did stop buying white for the most part, but I'll still buy white button up blouses. I find that they don't stain as easily as knit, and I often wear them under a sweater so that they are covered.

Now, a white skirt or pants? I owned them back when I was skinny and single, lol. Now, I wouldn't do it. I'd like an eyelet skirt, maybe, but I think it would probably submit, soon, to the trials of toddler hands.

Oh, I love looking at all the pretty white eyelet skirts and dresses... but haven't gotten the courage to buy one. My other problem color is light pink. It always seems to get dull and dingy after a few washes and looses that cotton candy hue.

whites are actually colored and you can ruin white tops with bleach.. isn't that weird.. but they will yellow with the use of bleach. peroxide and color safe bleach and stain remover without bleach might help the item last longer.

I like light and bright colors in the summer (think a hot pink top or red with khaki skirt/capri or a pale blue with denim) and occationally white but white isn't really my favorite.. though I do keep a white turtleneck and a white tee shirt and a white button up shirt to use occationally.

Another option for a "light colored" top if you don't like pale colors or solid white.. find pretty patterns.. like I have two tops that are a navy or red viney pattern on white.. the pattern helps with any spots showing and it's light but red and navy.. not pink or pale blue.

I voted "never" but I have to make a clarification. I wear white turtle necks underneath sweaters, vests, etc.

I have 6 boys. White is way too high maintenance for me.

That would be similar for me - I do wear white turtlenecks, tees and camis under things for layering. It's not the maintenance factor thing - it's a coloring issue for me. With my hair color changes (going to white) it washes me out so I voted other.

I wear white tops a lot, but like you said, Melinda, I'm rethinking them. They stain so easily, and need to be replaced. I do soaks in Oxy-Clean and detergent instead of Bleach, which helps some, but...

I used to always wear white shirts in the summer, but the quality has gone down so much they the material is so thin, even polo shirts, that layering for modesty seems to defeat the purpose of staying cool.

I didn't vote never, but sometimes with caution. I loved wearing white and still do but as of the last couple years white has become a difficult color to wear...think little people hand prints .

Bluing is supposed to help with that, I think, but I've never used it consistently enough to tell the difference.

I would like to be able to wear white, but I'm with Erin. Count me in as another "grot"

i don't know about the rest of you, but the word "bluing" scares me.

Using it seems like a good homemaker skill to acquire, though, like whipping heavy cream and beating egg whites. Once mastered, easy. I will have to look into it, but maybe not today....

I voted never, too high maintenance and white looks ghastly with my overly fair complexion.

For the uninformed, what's a grot? I have a feeling I should be a member of the club, but would like to know the proper classification before joining officially!

I voted "never," but not due to high maintenance, so maybe I should have voted "other."

I don't wear white, because when I graduated from nursing school (in the dark ages ,) everyone wore white uniforms. Down to the white support hose and white nurse's shoes. Just lovely. This was before color started creeping in. Definitely before scrubs became the uniform of choice.

So, when I was not working, I absolutely would never wear white. Not even shoes! Somehow, I just felt that if I had white on, I would look too "nursey."
To this day, I just don't wear white.

I wear white as often as possible! It is one of my "colors" (I'm a winter turning spring...or some such season color match theory.)

I don't baby my whites. I soak in Oxy Clean (and now I'm all a buzz about bluing as a possibility). Whenever I go to a thrift store, I scour the white Tshirt rack .

Love,

I'm an OFTEN, LOVE IT! girl for whites!

I love white eyelet, white t-shirts, white sweaters, white anything! Mostly in shirts/blouses, but I've done a cute white eyelet skirt before, too.

I have a system for my whites -->
HOT water washing (cold water rinse FIRST if there is a stain)
wash with other whites ONLY - no colors!!!
use Oxi-clean for everyday white washing in addition to deterg
use Tri-zyme (an Amway product) for protein type stains (blood, dirt, grass). This is in addition to deterg.
use Amway laundry pre-treat for special stains like pen ink or grease

I don't bleach my white shirts - I only bleach kitchen towels and bath towels.

I do gravitate toward white - I love a crisp white shirt and denim anything. White layers nicely under things. Almost 1/3 of my shirt selection is WHITE.

I DO get stains on white shirts and DO NOT stress about it. I almost always get stains out with my laundry system. I keep my laundry system easy so that I am involved to a minimal degree...so there are no special soaks or outside the washer maneuvers except for the occasional pre-treat which involves --> squirt stain, toss in washer or back in laundry bin to wait for washer.

WHITE

Love your system Jen! I wear white almost daily! My "uniform" seems to be a white t-shirt with a blouse or cardigan over it. I do have other t-shirt colors, but my go-to shirts are always the white ones.
Unfortunately we also have very hard water so they don't stay bright white for long. I'm always looking for sales on white shirts!

I'm going to have to check this Oxyclean stuff out!

I was raised on Clorox - but this old dog is very willing to try new laundry tricks!!
