I did an embarrassing amount of research on steam mops over Christmas when I had some Christmas money to spend and wanted a steam mop to disinfect my floors (we had the flu over the holidays...let's just say that I was motivated to get rid of the germs). I ended up buying the eureka envirosteamer because the steam got the hottest at 212 degrees. It was between that one or the bissell steam mop which handled slightly better than the envirosteamer but whose steam did not get very hot. I wanted something that would sanitize my floors with a hot hot steam...otherwise I figure a warm wet rag on my hands and knees is just as good. But I am very happy with the eureka model. It won't clean your grout (if you have tile) but your floors will be clean and chemical free. Good luck in your search and hope this helps!

Thanks Mary that helps.. we have wood floors so the hotter water actually means it evaporates faster and is better for the floors..
I want something for relatively quick clean ups.. something the kids might enjoy using at least at first.
How much of a "gadget" is the eureka? I mean.. how much do you need to prep it for use.. I assume add water.. that should be easy.. what about emptying dirty water? how easy is it to do those things. How much can one cleaning pad do? how long do they last? how easy/fidgity are they to replace? how well do they stay attached?

Yeah, it is another gadget, but one that I am quickly getting used to because my floors look and feel cleaner than they were when I cleaned them by hand (or mop). I find it fairly easy to use, but I haven't let my eldest child (10 yrs) use it (yet!) First you attach the cleaning pad onto the bottom of the steamer. It's made of a heavy waffle weave and attaches via clips on either side. The clips are sharp and hold the cloth easily in place. I haven't had any problems with the cloth coming loose, but I would say that it would be a better design if it came up and over the edges of the steamer. The envirosteamer comes with two washable pads and I have never used more than one in one sitting and believe me, my floors can be a sticky, horrible mess. You then place 2 measures of water (with a small plastic measuring cup that is included) in the top of the steamer, plug it in, and wait about 3-4 minutes until it starts steaming to mop. So set up is about 5 minutes, tops. I find that I can steam my entrance, kitchen, hallway and bathroom (a mix of tile and hardwood) without refilling the water reservoir. When I steam cleaned most of my first floor (the above spaces + Living room and 3 bedrooms) I needed to stop, unplug the unit, and refill with water. The cord is very long, so it reaches easily from room to room, but can be a bit cumbersome to deal with if you only want to steam clean one smaller room. One of the reasons I chose the envirosteamer over the bissell is ease of maintenance...you can use tap water and there are no filters to change, and no dirty water to deal with either. The bissell encouraged the use of distilled water and the occasional change of filters. I realize that I am beginning to sound like a commercial for the envirosteamer, but I have heard many good things about the other brands too. My SIL loves her Shark...and she's the one that got me to look into floor steamers in the first place. Anyway, HTH!

I have the Bissell that Mary linked to above. Overall it's a decent design - I don't use distilled water or fidget with filters and I've had it for 2 years now. The only problem I have with it is that the mop head is so tall that I can't get under the toe kicks in the kitchen, so I end up with a rag on my hands and knees anyway. I can't get around the bottom of the toilet either - and it could really use the hot steam!! That alone keeps me from using it when I do the kichen and bathroom.

I have a shark steam mop. I really, really like it. It has a rectangular head and a triangular one (to get into corners and around the toilet).

I also have the shark. Easy peasy and the mop heads come off and pop right into the wash.. Love it.
